Where is source (wim or esd) for dism (build 10586)?

Hi all,

I'm in trouble.  "sfc /scannow" says some system files are corrupted and it cannot fix some of them.  So I tried "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth", but it says it needs source!  Usually it doesn't say so.    Where is the source file?   a wim or esd file is nice.   Fortunately I have made a recovery disk (usb) beforehand, and it has \sources\reconstruct.wim.    Is it be available for the source?

TIA

Answer

Hi,

The Install.esd is normally in one of four places... It has varied over the course of the various builds...  I try to save a copy of it before I allow the installation to start...

Sometimes it's still there after the install, and sometimes it's not...

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\ a folder with a lot of numbers...

C:\$Windows~BT\Sources\

C:\$Windows~WS\Sources\

C:\$Windows~WS\Sources\Windows\Sources\

The C:\$Windows~WS is a fairly recent addition... I'm not real sure which build it started with.... Possibly 10240.
