Canary Channel Build 25967 - Rollback & Start Menu Bug

Hello Windows Insiders!

Build 25967 has been released to the Canary Channel. We are aware of an issue that some users may hit if they choose to complete a rollback to a prior build. See below for details.

Who: Windows Insiders on Canary Channel Build 25967

What: The Start Menu, Taskbar, Settings, and/or other features may not appear or work as expected once the rollback has been completed.

Why:  Issue is understood and a fix is in the work for future builds

Workaround:
If you install build 25967 and then roll back to a prior build, the following commands should be run via command prompt to restore expected functionality:

  • Press Ctrl+Alt+Del

  • Select Task Manager

  • Click Run New Task

  • Select the “Run this task with Administrative Privileges” box

  • Type Powershell and press enter (this will launch the Powershell app)

  • Paste the following command and press enter:

    • add-appxpackage -register C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.UI.Xaml.CBS_8wekyb3d8bbwe\appxmanifest.xml -disabledevelopmentmode

  • Your Start Menu and other desktop items should now be fixed.  To fix the Settings app, please run this additional command in Powershell:

    • add-appxpackage -register C:\Windows\ImmersiveControlPanel\appxmanifest.xml -disabledevelopmentmode

  • When completed, please reboot your device.

  • All desktop functionality and the Settings app should now work as expected.

We are working on a troubleshooter that will fix this automatically by re-registering some inbox packages that will fix the Start Menu launch. To see if this troubleshooter has been run on your device, check your troubleshooting history in Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Recommended troubleshooter history.

We appreciate your patience while we deliver a fix for this bug in a future build.  Please share any additional insights you may have on this bug either in the Feedback Hub or here in this thread.

Thank you as always,

- The Windows Insider Team
