Windows 10 - Some metro apps not working.

Hello,

My apologies if this is the wrong place to ask this.. Installed the preview a few days ago and am having some issues with some of the apps. PC Settings doesn't open nor does the Feedback app. Other apps work fine, like Weather and People.  When I open the PC Settings or the Feedback app, it hangs at the splash screen.

Any ideas what I could do?

Hi Ben,

Thank you for in interest in using Windows 10 Technical Preview.

Sorry to know that you are facing some issues on the new Operating System. Let me try and assist you with the issue you are facing.

You might face this issue if the Windows updates and drivers are not updated or if some system files are corrupt.

Follow these methods:

Method 1:
First, let us run the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) and check if it helps. The System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) scans for missing or corrupted system files and repairs them.

Run System File checker to see if you have any corrupted system files.

Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833/en-us

(Follow Windows 8, 8.1 section).

Method 2:
I would also suggest you to install all the latest Windows updates and also the latest device drivers.

Download and install drivers

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/all-drivers

Method 3:

Run the Apps troubleshooter. This tool can automatically identify and fix some problems with apps.

Let us know if it helps. If you have more queries, we will be happy to help.

Thank you for helping me.. Unfortunately the SFC found errors unable to repair. I have a log file but its huge, so I am not sure I can paste it here.  The app checker also mentioned the cache was corrupt but the issue still isn't resolved. Updates are up to date.  Next steps?

Thanks again

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply.

If you are still facing the issue, follow these steps:
a. Click on Start, type services.msc into the start menu search box and press Enter.
b. In Services, scroll down to "Remote Procedure Call. Right-click on it and make sure the status says "Started"and set to Automatic.
c. The second "RPC Locator" should be set to "Manual".

Now, try the DISM tool.

If that does not help, could you please test the issue on another user account.  If you do not have another user account, please create a new user account.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-user-account#create-user-account=windows-8

(Steps also applies to Windows 10 TP).

Let us know if it helps.

Hey everyone,

I'm editing Gabe's old post, but for good reason.  Back when it was written, the PowerShell script (now removed) fixed some of the problems folks were seeing with Metro apps not launching.  It was a good workaround until a fix was launched.

With as much as Win10 has changed in the year (actually longer) since then, running that same powershell script now will actually make the situation worse for users.

After partnering with folks in Engineering to obtain updated workaround steps, we've created a new thread with steps to follow.  Please navigate to this new thread and use those steps for troubleshooting.

Thank you,

- Jason
