Upgrade from activated Windows 10 Pro build 10166 to build 10240 deactivated the Windows and now I cannot reactivate it

According to this there should be no impact, but my Windows got issues.

I even used "Contact Support" app and after almost an hour spent by Microsoft Support Tech by remotely looking into my setup - he said to post question here and basically pray that somebody has the answer. Or hope that official release will fix the issue.

Anybody got the same problem? Any suggestions how to fix it?

I have the same issue. When ever I try to activate, the settings apps freezes. And now my system is deactivated. Anyone have a fix for this?

Hi Max

It seems that those keys are not working. I did in place upgrade from 10166 to version 10240 and my windows got deactivated (MS says this should not have happend) and now i can't activate or use any of those key as it does not work with a DNS error (odd i can access everything else).

Looking at the MSDN account there is no key to download and also if i use the windows insider 10 keys they won't work so i am in catch 22 situation right now.

Thank you

Feejus

New 10240 keys

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_install/windows-10-build-10240-activationkey/a870640c-5a39-42c4-9e04-60991136f6a9

These are the working keys for 10240.

  • Windows 10 Home build 10240 - TX9XD-98N7V-6WMQ6-BX7FG-H8Q99
  • Windows 10 Pro build 10240 - VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T
  • Windows 10 Enterprise build 10240 - NPPR9-FWDCX-D2C8J-H872K-2YT43

Tried to activate Enterprise with the key above

"Settings -> Change product key" accepts these keys - it is a good sign.

But once I tried to activate - I got "We couldn't activate Windows - Windows can't activate with this product key. Go to Settings for more information". In Settings it shows "Error code: 0x8007007B"

Tried "slmgr /ipk NPPR9-FWDCX-D2C8J-H872K-2YT43" - with the same results.

Exactly same problem with Pro on another PC.

- Thanks, Vladimir

1. Save your data to an external hard drive or USB

2. Use & install any windows 10 Professional build from 10074 to 10166.

3. Change the registry key using windows + R keys (run) and type regedit

Change the entries from fbl_Impressive to TH1

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability]

"Ring"="WIF"
"BranchName"="TH1"
"UserPreferredBranchName"="TH1"

4. Run windows update and it will download and install TH1 Professional Windows build 10240.

Thanks, Max, but unfortunately this does not solve the problem. I am not sure what you mean by "Change the entries from fbl_Impressive to TH1." I have Windows 10 Build 10166 on my PC and all the Registry entries are as you have indicated yet Windows Update says "Your device is up to date."

Hello all,

I am experiencing the exact same issue with my Windows 10 Enterprise 10240, and all workarounds suggested above didn`t work. When I try to activate using the provided key (NPPR9-FWDCX-D2C8J-H872K-2YT43), then I got the message "We couldn't activate Windows - Windows can't activate with this product key. Go to Settings for more information". In Settings it shows "Error code: 0x8007007B".

Make sure you can connect to the internet

To activate Professional try this

Right-click start, Command Prompt (admin)
Copy and paste the command and press enter
You should get a message - successful or failure

slmgr /ipk VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

or

slmgr /ipk W269N-WFGWX-YVC9B-4J6C9-T83GX

then reboot and check activation

If it is still not activated manually enter each code

Yes, that did the trick! I used the first code, as it match with the key I was trying to enter. Thank you, much!!
