[Build 14279/14291] Troubleshooting wizard "Hardware and Devices" falsely returns "Your PC must be restarted", no matter what.

The "Hardware and Devices" Troubleshooter always returns "Your PC must be restarted", even if no hardware or driver issues are present in Device Manager and no changes have been applied. No amount of restarts changes this.

Surface Pro 3 i7 w/build 14279/14291.

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused. I will assist you with this.

The issue might have happened due to corruption in Windows system files I suggest you to perform a System File checker and see if it helps to resolve the issue.

Please refer the link below to run a system file checker scan and check if that helps.

SFC /scannow is broken in build 14279 (ok in other builds) so that will not help.

You get the error - "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service."

Try turning off "fast startup" in Power Options if you have this option available.

1. Right-click start, Power options

2. Click "Require a password on wakeup"

3. Click "Change settings that are currently unavailable"

4. Untick [  ] Turn on Fast startup

5. Click [save changes]

6. Shutdown and reboot. (do not just restart)

Thanks for the tip! But...turning off fast boot (a valuable feature) to fix a harmless anomaly, isn't that a bit of an overreaction?

Did you try it and did it work ?

The reason it might fix this issue is because the device needs to fully shutdown,

but with fast boot it only hibernates even when shutdown.

You can always re enable fast boot after the error goes away.

Tried it, but no change. It explicitly says "Restart isn't affected" on this setting, so I can't say I was surprised ;)

Try using Skip this fix instead?

After making the change to not use fast boot did you shutdown or just restart?

If you just restarted, you need to click start, shutdown.

If you did shutdown then I have no more suggestions.

Funnily enough, "Apply this fix" doesn't actually apply the fix, it just send you to the next page; "Restart your PC".

"Skip this fix" send you straight to "Troubleshooting has completed", where it says problem has been found and the PC must be restarted.

It's all a bit of a loop.

And this is why it is called Preview/Insiders testing of BETA software, and when Bug's, glitches, are found they need to be posted into the Feedback App so it can be fixed in an upcoming build.
