Windows 10 "Tablet Mode" Experience is much WORSE than Windows 8.1 Start/Metro UI Tablet Experience **Part 2**

Please see the original post here .

The old thread was getting too large, and to avoid performance issues, I have started this new thread to continue the conversation.

Credit goes to PaoloCardelli for the conversation.

One thing I miss is the flip animation on opening app. I would have loved to see that extend to legacy apps as well as store apps in Windows 10. Using the flip animation, it always originated from the tile, so you would see the tile flip and expand to fill the screen. I don't know why they would choose to take something great like that and change it to something less inventive. The flip animation added to the whole fluidity of the UI. It connected the open app to the tile. Fade is boring and disconnected since the animation is no longer expanding from the tile itself. Even a zoom effect would be better than a fade. Fade on close is fine, but it's too disconnected on an open. Just my 2 cents on a very small detail.

@PaoloCardelli

I hope you don't mind I copy pasted your issue list in this new thread as a summary of where things have left off in the previous thread, for purposes of continuity. Thanks.

Issue list from roughly around 10-11 september 2015:

UPDATE 16 (Build 14631.1)

What's still broken and/or must be improved:

Edit info.

Status of bugs and issues with tablet mode in windows 10:

Number

Items Done?
1 Tablet Mode: When choosing/resuming opened and multitasked apps from "Task View" preview (clicking or tapping), there's an ugly "white flashing" during the resuming animation and before we can see again the application full screen. It's very jarring and bad to see; no
2 Tablet Mode: When the system was in "Connected Standby" for too long, after resuming and going to "Task View" almost all the preview thumbnail are gone/glitched, and only the opened apps Titles remain: very ugly to see; yes
3 Tablet Mode: Swipe down thumbnails preview to close Apps in "Task View" is missing (inconsistency with touch usage compared to Windows 10 Mobile); yes
4 Surface Pro 3 Only: turning on the device a "white flash" appears both on first bios loading, and just before Windows Log-in screen. It seems Intel GPU Drivers problem; yes
5 Tablet Mode (Always on, never prompt): Almost on every boot Start Screen does not appear if there's some legacy desktop program loading in system tray and showing legacy notifications (for example: AdGuard Desktop). The only way to let show it up is tapping many times on Start or exiting/re-entering Tablet Mode from Action Center. Very frustrating; yes
6

Wi-Fi strength is unreliable (Speedtest.net performance is flacky while it was rock solid on 8.1 on the same device and environment). New Full HD streaming stuttering arise (where I never had that problem before on same network);

9 Calendar Live Tile doesn't update itself (Tablet Mode); yes
10 Native Maps app doesn't have transit Bus/Metro paths, but only on Foot and Car (Italy); yes
11 Tablet Mode: when opening File Explorer or any legacy desktop program/window there is a "double-animation" of the window opening in full screen. Annoying; yes
12 Lock Password Image "blinks to white" before I can enter my image password, I assume it's a bug. Never seen something like that on 8/8.1; yes
13 When rebooting, it often appears a window saying "Waiting for the programs to close before rebooting". Very Windows 7-Style and annoying, never seen something like that in 8/8.1; yes
14 In Tablet Mode, clicking with a mouse/trackpad on Task Bar buttons often does not register clicks, and need to be clicked 2/3 times before it register. Works fine with touch instead (it seems a bug with the "pop-up tooltip" when the mouse cursor pass by); yes
15 "Searchindexer.exe" crashes a lot in Reliability Monitor, and it often hangs for a while active windows; yes
16 Opening Apps in Tablet Mode with "auto-hide taskbar" enabled shows for 1-2 seconds taskbar on apps splash-screen, it's a bit ugly; yes
17 In Tablet Mode on boot, sometime there's no "Start Screen" animation, but after log-in it just blinks black, and Start Screen is there. A regression to the beautiful entering of 8.1 Start Screen. yes
18

Full Screen/Immersive Edge is STILL missing (auto-hiding and animated menu bar / address / favourites bar while scrolling.

Merge the desktop and tablet mode experience to get the best balance in options and universal and would cater everyone's needs (which is still not adressed. The experience is still fragmented between a dekstop and tablet camp, similar to windows 8.x, and is not bringing out the best of windows 10). Suggestions:

* upgrade the simplistic desktop icons and shortcuts to live tiles

*allow similar degrees of freedom to pin live tiles to the desktop like in the startmenu.

*add support for file live tiles

*Be able to create custom live tiles with all options of an explorer shortcut (path, action, icon color, etc.)

*add support for folder live tiles

*increase peronalization options for live tiles by supporting customization of color and transparency of individual live tiles, both native and third party, at the control of the end user.

*change the behavior of the tablet mode button in the action center (tablet mode will open all apps in full screen mode, desktop mode will open all apps as windowed apps)

*support snapping of up to 4 app for both desktop and tablet mode as standard (by dragging the app to the corners or left/right edge)

*support swipe down from top to bottom of the screen to close all apps in both desktop and landscape mode for all inputs modes.

*support both vertical and horizontal snapping of apps for both landscape and portrait orientations

*support both vertical and horizontal autoresizing for both landscape and portrait orientations. Click here for details.

Switching apps from the task view in tablet mode is not as smooth compared to desktop mode. The animations in tablet mode show glitches when the apps open full screen or snapped. This can be seen as black or white flash during the full screen rendering of the app. In some apps full screen shows a slight shift animation up-down at the end of the full-screen rendering. All app previews in task view in desktop mode show real-time animations, while this is limited to only the top left app preview in the task list in tablet mode. Explorer behaves differently by default in tablet/desktop mode. In tablet mode the ribbon is open by default but closed in desktop mode. The ribbon is really to crowded and crammed with functions to be usable for touch in tablet mode. Suggestion to revamp the explorer menu similar to office 365 and onenote mobile for a more universal accessible input method that is friendly for all inputs.. The ribbon is really catered for mouse in real world use. Click here for more details.

It seems that enabling tablet mode in RTM 10586 somewhat limits and reduces real system power (CPU and GPU usage plus resources and memory management) to accomodate "real and limited ARM/Atom based tablets". This should not be the case with the more powerful intel i5 chips, where "tablet mode" should be merely a UI/UX adjustment only, retaining all the same usage of that hardware as desktop mode, like the windows 8.1 start already did before. Randomly, after opening the snipping tool (in either tablet or desktop mode), if I AUTOMATICALLY switch my surface pro 2 to desktop/tablet mode via continuum (when I attach/deattach the keyboard or unfold/fold it back), the snipping tool blocks pen input (at its screen clip preview/editor window) until I exit and reopen it again. Only accepts touch input in this situation, taking a new screen clip while it hasn't been exited and reopened before, still results in it blocking pen input. Switching back to tablet or desktop mode (regardless if manually or automatically) has no effect, still won't let me annotate naturally with my pen on the screen clip.

If I take a screen clip MANUALLY switch to tablet or desktop mode, the snipping toll still recognizes both my pen or touch input. in other words, this issue only randomly arises when continuum is AUTOMATICALLY initiated.

The suggestion (build 2016) for the new full screen app list is not optimized to use the whole canvas. There is unused space to the left and right of the listed apps).  It would be better to stretch the app listing (when applicable) horizontally as far as possible to the other edge before entering a new line).

Pinned webtiles should  show the website's favicon (website's icon or at least a snapshot of the website, just like in windows 8) even when not enabled by the developer. It currently only shows an microsoft Edge logo. This makes it difficult to descern webtiles at a glance when multiple instances of webtiles on the webtiles are pinned and shown. For small webtiles this is even more problematic, because these tiles are too small to show text.

After resume from sleep, continuum randomly gets confused and is all backwards. In laptop form with Type Cover, it switches to Tablet mode, with Type Cover detached and in Tablet form, it exits out of Tablet mode! (Surface pro 2).

In Tablet Mode, with the Taskbar set to autohide at the top, quick-swiping inwards from the top of the screen doesn't make the Taskbar appear! The "Show Taskbar" gesture is still tied to quick-swiping inwards from the bottom, which is unintuitive.

The "new" app list doesn't make optimal use of the available space. It would be better if more of the spacing to the left and right is used, but leaving enoug space that it does not interfere with accedental pressing of the side bar or swipe gestures from the edges.  Click here to read on more details.

@swanlee

in chrome, you can get out full screen mode by touching anywhere on top of the screen edge. that would trigger an exit full screen message option popup

I still get stuck in full screen mode in Chrome, for some reason it is glitchy on my surface pro running Win 10, same with firefox and Opera I get stuck more often than not in full screen mode for those browsers

Wow, I never imagined to see growing this Discussion to this point.

Thanks for the split, this gives me more hope you guys at Microsoft are not only acknowledging all those Tablet Experience issues, but increasing the priority of those issues on par of the increasing popularity of the Discussion.

@Wevenhuis10 : no problem for pasting the updated list of the issues and feedback, I was going to do the same. Thanks ;)

Yeah, I miss Win 8.1 PC Start Screen Live Tiles Flipping Animation too (but I never liked the WP8 flipping, it was different).

Unfortunately, I don't think it will come back.

They're uniforming animations both for PC/Tablet/Smartphone and even the new Xbox One dashboard...

Oh, and they did it to make iOS and Android users feel at home with Windows (and then make iOS/Android apps porting more native) too

If I'm not mistaken the live tile animations are part of the live tile api. I could imagine in the future that people would want to choose from more live tile animations, just like you can choose different alarm sounds for your alarm or choose between light and dark themes. You can currently also choose to turn of live tile updating of data through the context menu. I think it will be more a question of when we will get it.

I would like some tiles to flip and others to 3D-animate.

I think we will see more feature changes in the live tiles in the coming years. Interactive live tiles are also coming.

Looks like some incremental tablet mode improvements are on the way.  This might make me even want to jump back into the insider rings.

From: Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10547

Improvements to Tablet mode: When in Tablet mode, from Task View you can now snap apps to left and right, replace a previously snapped app with another (teeter) and swipe down to close an app.

This is VERY nice. Finally some serious "8.1 Experience" is coming back.

Can't wait

Indeed.

That's two and a half items off my list:

  1. Snap will now ask which app to replace (teeter)
  2. Apps can be snapped from the task view (what about the taskbar, though?)
  3. (.5 actually) Tile groups can now have two large tiles side by side (it shouldn't be limited at all, in my opinion, hence the .5)

Paul -- feel free to mark 1 & part of 2 as resolved in the main list.

Now that I think about it, Paul is no longer the OP. Who is going to maintain "the list"?
