Windows says it's an evaluation copy after upgrade (upgraded to Version 10.0.16193.1001)

Hi,

So as the title says, I restarted my laptop to get the updates installed, and when it got turned back on it returned with the evaluation copy message on the desktop.

Before that I didn't had any problems with that. Now I have version 10.0.16193.1001 of Windows.

I bought the laptop with Windows 8 and then upgraded it with time. I also switched an hard drive, and then re-installed from scratch from a copy I've downloaded from the Microsoft website. From what I remember, when I re-installed windows it was when windows 10 was still free to install if that matters.

Anyways, what can I do about it now? Can I restore the activation code somehow?

Thanks,

Ariel

Hi Ariel,

Let's try to resolve your concern. Yes you can restore your activation code since you upgraded, you should have a digital license instead of a product key. Click these links for more information: Find your Windows product key, Activation in Windows 10.

Looking forward to your response.

You need to download the Public build, as you have installed the Insiders/Preview version, you can get the Public builds from this location make sure you download the right version 32 or 64 Home or Pro:

To check if your computer is activated;
Right click Start, click Command Prompt(Admin)
enter slmgr /xpr  Then hit the Enter key
It will tell you when it expires.

All Insider preview builds have an expiration date even if the computer is activated.

Hi, thanks for the answer.

I can see the product key under System -> Product ID, is it the one I need?

And in the activation settings it seems to be activated digitally:

Is there a place where I should re-activate?

Hi, thanks for your reply. I did that and it says "The machine is permanently activated", so it seems right. I added some more details in my reply to Radney's post.

Thanks!

Thanks for the offer.

Are you sure this is the solution? It was activated before and it's not the first insider build I'm getting through Windows Update

Just WOW! Is  there absolutely no criteria for being an Insider? One can just "accidently" become an Insider and not know it? You can be an Insider and not even know what that is or what the build is for, that it's not for your personal PC you use everyday? You can be an Insider and be baffled by the eval notice on the desktop and think it's a problem you need to ask about in the forums even though it's not the first one you've received? You can be an Insider without ever reading a single agreement, warning, etc ? That's just incredible. But, I guess there's useful information to be gained from them too.

Hi Lawrence,

Slmgr /xpr does not give an expiry date for Insider Builds if the machine is activated legally. I mean, either upgraded from Win 7 or Win 8 till 29 July 2015 or activated with a Win 10 product key.

But Winver gives an expiry date for the same Insider Build irregardless of activation method.

Yes. That is absolutely the solution. You say it's not your first one yet you just now noticed the build info on your desktop. The fact that you have no idea what you're doing ( You can't even tell if your own computer is activated or not) and have installed a preview on your personal everyday computer is more than enough reason for you to take his advice and download a public release. There is no reason whatsoever for you to have a preview copy. How are you going to handle all the issues and bugs? How are you going to know if something isn't working correctly? What are you going to do when you have a crash or even a hang?  Do you know how to do a dump? Can you do diagnostics? How have you managed this far in the insider program? By making posts like this one? You're in way over your head. Download the latest public release and call it a day.

The only time that an Insider Preview does not have an Expire date is just before the release to the public.

All of the rest of time there is an expiration date.

The date for the current Insider Preview, Build 16193 is December 4, 2017.

If people have not updated then their builds expire today If I remember.

There is a current ISO for 16193 available.
