Windows 10 phone: How to add ringtones to existing phone list

I have downloaded ringtones, however they don't get added to the ringtone list available

for the phone.  With Windows 10 phone, I don't see where I can select a ringtone for

incoming messages, I'm hoping it comes with the next Windows 10 build.  Mean while I would

like to find out how to add ringtones to the list available for the phone.

As far as I can tell, the system is the same as in WP8.1; to add a ringtone, it needs to be transferred from a PC or tablet which is physically connected to the phone -- not downloaded.

There will be a folder for Ringtones shown on the phone's internal storage when you connect (not the SD card), and the ringtones must be transferred to that. After that, they should show up in the available list. Might have to close and reopen the settings, is all.

Quite why it's so baroque and picky is unknown to me, but that is the way of things with the Windows.

Have fun,

Rob

I have an Windows 8.1 phone also, I tried the download that way and it doesn't

work on the Windows 10 phone, , the list is in a hidden place.  I couldn't see the list using File Explorer, but I seen folders showing Ringtones.  The ringtones in that folder are only the ones I got from the web. I can't find where the list is stored that the phone gives an option to use, therefore I can't add ringtones to it.

Indeed, the system list is in a hidden place; the "Ringtones" folder is for user-added items that then show up in the list.

I've just tried it (the old 630 on 10166), transferring a new mp3 file to Ringtones. Then in Notifications & Actions, there'll be a list of apps with notification settings. Opening Messaging gives you the list of sounds, and for me the newly added file showed up there. I think it uses the Title tag in the mp3 metadata.

Also, under Personalisation -> Sounds, there's an option for Ringtones; same story. Not sure what else I can say? What do you see there?

In Notifications & Actions I see several apps, non have to do with Messaging, the

option I see is either ON or OFF.  I see AT&T address book, Nokia (which I can't

sign in, get Network Problem, Try Later ( have tried several times, not in a row)),

Outlook mail, Outlook calendar, Skype, and Windows Feedback.   Again the

only option I have for the above apps is On or Off.

In Personalization there is one spot to choose a Ringtone, press on the down arrow

and the list appears, but the downloaded ringtone that is in my Ringtones folder

isn't located in that list.  I went through the list several times, power cycled the

phone, still doesn't show in the list available for the phone to use.

I now have one of the ringtones in my Downloads folder, I held my finger on it,

but didn't get the option to save as a Ringtone.  That was the example shown

in how to get additional ringtones help file.

Very odd. I assume the Messaging app is actually installed -- these things can get accidentally uninstalled in the rough-and-tumble, I know. But in my list of apps there is a Messaging, and tapping it brings up another page for the app-specific settings; that's where the various options are.

Never seen that "Save as a ringtone" though, I've always done it the other way. There's some strange stuff in that list of apps; I imagine the Nokia thing is a leftover relic of bygone times. And why would we get notifications from "Extras and Info"? Curiouser and curiouser.

But there should be a new build along in a couple of days; perhaps the UI will have been rationalised a bit. There's always that.

Hi Rob,

I have 2 phones, one Windows 8.2 and the other Windows 10, the 8.2 has the

SIM card, the Windows 10 generally doesn't.  I wonder since I didn't have the

SIM card in the test phone (Windows 10) that is why I didn't get it.

If something went wrong with the test phone during the Windows 10 update, I

didn't want to be without a phone.

I placed the SIM in the Windows 10

phone so I could connect with Nokia Account, I thought that is why I was

receiving an update for the app, but it couldn't install.  I sent back the feedback on

the error I was receiving from the Nokia App failure to install.

Yes, it sounds like there are other issues here. I updated the old 630 without a SIM, as I recall, but everything installed. You just get a SIM error on booting up.

I've had to SIM it a couple of times as the new phone went belly-up -- I've had three phones in six weeks, don't ask -- and it was picked up seamlessly each time. So it sounds as though you've a dodgy installation somehow. Still advisable to keep the main phone on 8.2, at least until this new update, 10240+.

Good luck,

Rob

Just received the new build, checked and still no message app. 10.0.10512-1000

is the new build. Guess I have to wait until the next build and just use the 8.1 phone.

I have a slightly different problem.  I have a Ringtone Maker App and have created Ringtones from my music on my phone, I can set those custom ringtones for my Alerts&Alarms and for the default phone Ringtone, but cannot find them when I try to edit my Contacts and apply a custom Ringtone.    When you try to add a Ringtone, it says "You need to install an app for this task.  Would you like to search for one in the store?"  And when you click on Yes, you get a "Page Not Found".  This is on my Lumia 1520 with Build 10512.

Anyone found an app for that?
