Windows 10 Hangs on Startup

I have installed Windows 10 onto a HP Pavillion dv5:

  • AMD Athlon X2 Dual-Core QL-60
  • 3GB RAM

Everytime that I startup my laptop Windows brings up the logo and the dancing dots do about 1 rotation and it will hang.  I power cycle my laptop and it will startup normally and I will have no other problems.  Installed software:

  • Windows 10
  • Office 2013 Pro from Office 365
  • ConnectWise client
  • Synaptics Pointing Device Driver

I suggest you use MSCONFIG to disable all non-Microsoft services and use Task Manager to disable startup apps.  Then, If you are able to boot normally and consistently, add what you have disabled back a few at a time, then test your ability to boot.  When the problem returns, you may have found your culprit among the last items you have reenabled.  Disable those items and then reenable them one at a time and test your boot until you identify the issue.

Ran MSConfig and disabled all non-Microsoft services.  Rebooted my laptop and the same thing is happening.  I had to do a hard power down and start up again and Windows comes up properly.

I had Windows 8.1 installed on this laptop before I installed Windows 10 and never had this problem.

I'd believe there is a driver issue that's causing a problem during boot.

I suggest that the next step is to try to determine the faulty driver.

1.  Run MSCONFIG again, click the Boot tab, and check the "Boot log" box

2.  Reboot your PC.  When your PC hangs, shut it down and turn it back on so you can log in.

3.  After you log in, run MSCONFIG again and disable the "Boot log" option.

4.  In the \Windows folder, you'll see a file named NTBTLOG.TXT.  Open the file and scroll to the bottom of the file.  Then scroll up until you see the date and time.  The line immediately above that time stamp is the last driver it attempted to load.

5.  Copy and paste the five lines above the timestamp.

I kind of understand that it could be a driver but if I do a restart there is no problem.  After I shutdown, when I start up on the first try it freezes.  Then after a power cycle it boots up properly.  If it was a driver issue it would not boot up after the power cycle.  Also all the drivers that are installed are the stock Windows drivers.  I did not install any HP drivers after rebuilding.

Thanks for the info.  After looking through the boot log, I don't see evidence of a hang during boot up.  Normally, you would see more than one boot attempt indicated by repeated entries of some of the drivers.  For instance, at the top you see HAL.DLL, but it only appears once as though this boot log was only for one successful boot attempt and it didn't capture the hang.

When you installed Windows 10, did you install it over a previous version of Windows or did you boot from media and reformat?  Reformatting is preferred if you are having problems.  Windows 10 almost certainly has retained some of the software and possibly a driver from the previous version of Windows if a format was not performed.

Furthermore, it may be that you have malware on your system that was present from your previous version of Windows.  See the line in the log "BOOTLOG_LOADED \SystemRoot\system32\drivers\CEA.sys"?  Read what it says here about CEA.SYS: http://www.spywarelib.com/file-140300f3e617eed1c8b1da7251fe311c-cea.sys.html  I'm not saying it IS malware, but there is some evidence.  If you have malware on your system and you did not format the hard drive as part of the installation, I suggest you reformat and reinstall to be safe.

I understand what you are saying about the drivers, but you may find that some drivers respond differently during a reboot vs. a cold boot because when you do a reboot, the computer's components have not been fully powered off, RAM cleared, etc.  That might account for the difference in boot behavior.

Let me know what you think,

Mark

I may have been premature with the half-cocked accusation that CEA.sys could be malware.  After a little more research, it appears to be a legitimate Windows file.  It should be 64,976 bytes in size and have a date stamp of 9/13/2014, 02:20 AM.

Still, reformatting and reinstalling might just be the fastest way of resolving your issue.

First this a clean installation, I did not install over another version.  I have been doing this for a while and I know with pre releases that installing over another version can cause a lot of problems.

Second both times that I boot up are cold boots.  I will shutdown the laptop and leave it over night and then when I come back to it I power it on and everytime it will freeze.  Then I hold the power button, shut it down and power it back on again and I am fine.

At this point I see a few possible causes and outcomes:

1.  Windows 10 is not completely compatible with your system because it's still half-baked, has incomplete driver support, etc.  You can either live with the issues, reload Windows 8.1 or try Windows 10 again after another build has been issued.

2.  There may be Windows 8.1 drivers available for your chipset, video, sound, etc. that may make a difference.  Your problem may be due to power management support problems in Windows 10.  If you boot into safe mode and the problem goes away, this may be your issue.  You could reload Windows 8.1 and install Windows 10 over that to see if that helps.

3.  You have a hardware failure that Windows 10 is sensitive to that Windows 8.1 is not.  You can run diagnostics, CHKDSK /R, etc. to see if anything is reported.  I would focus on checking for bad hard drive sectors or memory locations.

4.  You may have an issue due to temperature.  Do you have the problem when you turn your computer off and then on (not restart) right away when it is warm?  If so, you may have an aging component that needs some heat to work properly.

5.  You may have a problem with a component attached to your PC, such as a printer, external mouse, Wifi adapter, etc.  You'll want to make sure to disconnect anything that can be disconnected.  I think this is probably not your issue.

6.  You may have malware.  Run a full malware scan with Malwarebytes, Hitman Pro, Combofix, etc. to be sure that nothing's lurking in your boot sector, you don't have a root kit etc.  I think this is probably not your issue either.

7.  You may have an issue with a setting in CMOS setup, such as your hard drive configuration or power saving.  You could make some adjustments there one setting at a time to see if it makes a difference.  You could even restore your CMOS setup back to default.

8.  A BIOS update may help.  I would leave this as a last resort because there is a risk that if the update is done incorrectly it could make your system non-functional.  If you have never done an update, it might make a difference.

Hi,

I would like to add that I have the exact same problem as the original poster. My machine is a slightly different configuration but the symptoms are exactly the same - every time I select Shut Down from the "Shut Down or Sign Out" menu (when right-clicking the start button) then the next time I boot it hangs but forcing a power recycle by holding the power button down results in a successful boot.

My configuration differs because firstly the processor and RAM are different:

- Intel Core i7

- 6GB RAM

Also I have installed this as a dual boot with Windows 8.1.

However the symptoms are the same so I suspect it is the same bug in Windows 10 on both systems.

I'm not looking for someone to resolve this because I can live with this bug quite happily (I usually sleep rather than shut down) but just thought I'd add to the thread that this is not an issue that only one person is facing.

Regards,

Terry.

I agree with you, this is not a show stopper for being able to play Windows 10.  It is just something that is happening to me and I thought seeing as I am using the preview version that someone should know.  If this was a production version of the OS I may try more of the things that you are suggesting, but it isn't.  If this problem persists after the release then that will be a different matter.

It is interesting to know that I am not the only person that is suffering from the same thing.
