Windows 10 does not detect a hotswap hard drive when inserted.

Window 10 9879.

My Enermax hotswap storage hard drive is not detected when it is inserted into the drive bay while Windows 10 is running.

It does see it when doing a fresh reboot and all files are accessible.

Any suggestions ?

Ron.

the SATA controller and drivers must support hot swap and present this to the OS,

if you don't see a safe remove icon with the SATA drive listed after reboot
then the controller / controller BIOS or Drivers or both don't actually supoport hot swap,
and the only way to hot swap is by reboot,

also note , some SATA controllers / drivers only allow hot disconnect with safe removal
but still don't allow hot connect except on reboot.
I find the lack of configuration options disturbing !

The hotswap works perfectly with Windows 7 Home Premium.  I can insert it anytime running Windows 7 and I have access to the files on the hotswap drive.

It just does not work with Windows 10.

Is there possible drivers I might have to install in Window 10 to make it work ?

onboard on chip integrated southbridge / FCH SATA controller
or add-on PCI-e SATA / SAS controller?
either way there are no win 10 drivers yet
the closest match will be for windows ape or ape.1  if available,
and you will need to download that from the Mfg. site.

Thanks for your help Locutus,

I did some checking in my bios settings and the problem is solved by enabling the Sata ESP on the port that is connected to my HotSwap bay.  It is now showing in the Safely remove hardware icon in the tray.

I decided to try things in bios after what you mentioned about Sata Controllers.

I realize this is an old one, but I had this same problem.  My workaround is this:

To get a disk in (first time):

Insert disk into hotswap bay.

Open a command prompt with admin rights.

Run diskpart

Use the rescan command.

Open computer management, disk management and it will show as a foreign drive.

Import the drive and it's done.

To get a disk in (same disk subsequent time):

Insert disk into hotswap bay.

Open a command prompt with admin rights.

Run diskpart

Use the rescan command.

Open disk management.

Online the drive and it's done.

To pull a disk out:

Offline the drive in disk management.

Remove disk from hotswap bay.

Open command prompt with admin rights

Run diskpart

Use diskpart's rescan command.

The disk disappears from the disk management window and it's done.

I wrote a small batch (.CMD) file to do a hardware rescan and and saved it to my desktop, so when I attach a new SATA drive with Windows running all I have to do is double click the icon and swish - drive appears.

While I realize an entire hardware refresh is not probably necessary... it's an easy fix/patch...  :)

Here's the single line script...

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Tools\x64\devcon" rescan

I run a fleet of HP notebooks that  are basically all the same and I have them all running W10 Pro, except 1 activated Enterprise.  If 1 develops a mechanical issue, I am like the undertaker that has suited up 2 stiffs with the wrong set of clothing, he just switches the heads.

Here is my working solution -

1  Unplug both hard drives from dead HP A and B

2  Plug A hard drive  in B hard drive

3  Fire up B

4  Put hard drive A on shelf for future use.

My HPs retain digital Entitlement on a hard drive swap.

Just swapped drives last week.  I have another hard drive on the shelf from  a dead HP that I just plug into any  HP and update to current build.  I also swap motherboards without losing activation.

I have a SATA USB harness that plugs in any 2 1/2" drive so I can pull or access all data on a hard drive.  After the data is pulled, I then have a very large USB storage device.  In my grave yard, I have 2 17" HPs that used 2 hard drives.  Great storage devices if only I needed large storage devices - lol.

I have Windows 10 Pro Retail with ASUS Crosshair V Formula A-Z main board, and I installed a iStarUSA 3-bay HotSwat bay.  Enabling just the Sata ESP for the SATA cables I hooked to the bay did not work for me, I had to reboot every time for the drive added to the HotSwat bay so that Windows 10 would acknowledge it.  Having Device Manager search for newly installed drive did not work either.   Until I reinstalled the SATA drivers for my main board.  After that the mainboard saw the the newly installed drive like it should, and opened File Explorer for the HotSwap drive shortly after installing it.  Plus the drive now shows up to safely eject it too, on the task bar hidden icons window.

Sorry for a late response to this question but i recentlly had the same issue with my Asus Hero motherboard and S71 Thermaltake case with hot swap dock . Issue lied in BIOS settings if optional you must enable hot swap on all SATA ports you intend on using.
