Hi,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Community.

Sorry to know that you are facing this issue. As Windows 10 Technical Preview is still in developmental stage, you may expect some compatibility issues as of now and some features or settings might not work as expected.

The black screen issue could be related to display drivers and might get resolved by updating the display drivers. Without the correct driver, the hardware or device that you want to use won't work properly.

Please answer these questions to get more clarity on this issue:

  • Did you install all pending Windows Updates and also updated all device drivers after installing Windows 10 Technical Preview?

  • Did you try to boot the computer in Safe Mode? If yes do you get the display screen?

You may boot the computer in Safe Mode with Networking and check if you are able to get the display on the screen.

With Windows Startup Settings (which used to be called "Advanced boot options") you can start Windows in different advanced troubleshooting modes to help you find and fix problems on your PC.

Safe Mode with Networking starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and services. If a problem doesn't reappear when you start your PC in safe mode, you can eliminate the default settings and basic device drivers and services as possible causes.

Windows Startup Settings (including safe mode): http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-safe-mode

Further, if you are able to get the display on the screen, then you may update the display drivers from the Device Manager to check if this helps.

Follow these steps to update the display driver:

  • Press (Windows key + X) and click on “Device Manager”.

  • Expand “Display Adaptor”.

  • Right click on the video driver and select “Update Driver Software”. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.

Reply with the status of the issue and we will be glad to offer our assistance.

I had the same problem with NVIDIA drivers. What I did was I somehow booted to safe mode (I kept hard-powering down my computer until I got to the WIndows Restore screen). After I got to safe mode, I simply uninstalled all NVIDIA drivers I had. I booted back up and it started working. It's really pathetic how it's been 5 days with no response. I hope this helps.

The same weird UX is happening on a VM.  In the latest build (10049) they have at least inserted your Lock Screen first so you know that something works properly.  In earlier builds I was having to use Win-P and a button on the VM which toggles between Basic and Enhanced to wake/shake it up.  And then I wasn't even letting the VM know about my second monitor.

FWIW I think Win-P CursorUp Enter may still be a worthwhile workaround tactic.  E.g. the idea is that the video system has found a phantom monitor to project to as the primary of an extended pair.

Good luck

the problem with 30 seconds up to 1 minute black screen before the login screen appear still exist.

Ah.  Then you should see what a Restart looks like when you are running it as a Hyper-V VM under W8.1.2.   Some of the inexplicable flips and flops going on then might explain some of the "black screen" delay you are seeing.   <eg>

FWIW I don't think I saw the Lock screen then either but the VM was doing so much flipping around I may have missed it.   For full effect make sure that you don't have a maximized window for your VM.

I'm going to have to do it again to see if I can try to remember it all.

Otherwise, you could try using WPRUI for its boot tracing.  I assume that still works in W10.
