How to: Add the Favorites folder to the Windows 10 Start Menu

Technical Level : Basic

Summary

Favorites have been a part of the Windows shell system as far back as the first version of Internet Explorer. Since then, Favorites has been integrated deeply within Windows as a way to store quick access to our favorite websites and even resources on an Intranet, hence the name, 'Favorites'. Since the introduction of the two pane menu in Windows XP, Favorites has been a quickly accessible location, with Windows 10 though, this is not available by default. You can still enable it, but the method has changed, in this article, we show you how to do it.

Details

Open your User Folder:

Press Windows key + R

Type: %userprofile%

Hit Enter on your keyboard

Right click Favorites folder and click Pin to Start

This will add Favorites tile to the Start menu, see below.

Select it with your left mouse button and drag to recent items menu shortcut list then release.

Favorites will be added to the Start menu.

Unlike Favorites in Windows 7, this does not have the sub menu links, see below:

Here is a work around you can use:

if you use Internet Explorer, you can Press Alt + C > Favorites (tab) and quickly access your favorites that way or press Alt on your keyboard > click Favorites to access them.

Another alternative

Open your User folder

Press Windows key + R

Type: %userprofile%

Hit Enter

Right click and Copy your Favorites Folder

Paste it on the desktop

Rename it Favorites 2

Go back in the User folder

Open Favorites again

Open the Favorites Bar folder

Drag and drops Favorites 2 folder in there

Right click the Taskbar > Toolbar > Links

This will enable the Links menu on the Taskbar

Click it and you should see something similar but even quicker.

It didn't answer my question. I wanted to know in Windows 10 how to add a location in maps to your favorites. It was helpful to pin it to start. The information was correct. I just wish it went further.

Using the Links toolbar addition works, but involves maintaining a second copy of Favorites.  A simpler way is to just make your Favorites folder a Toolbar as well.

Right click the Taskbar > Toolbars > New Toolbar

Browse to your Favorites folder (usually in C:\Users\YourName\Favorites)

Click Select Folder

Thanks for the simple straight forward fix.  I began with DOS and had hoped Win 7 was my last new system.  Oh, well, thank God for these forums.

Followed directions but it did NOT pin it to the start menu.  Why are all the old toolbar functions of windows 7 highly secret in windows 10 and only accessible through elaborate multistep non-intutitive procedures? Are the geeks getting arrogant and feel the common herd has gotten too familiar with their systems and must be shut out?

This is the best solution so far.  However, to open it you have a tiny little double arrow on the right side of the taskbar next to the notifications area (along with the word "Favorites" that just takes up space).  I wish we could get it as a star icon on the left side of the taskbar next to the start button.

I am a novice user, however, I am 70 years old.  I got my first computer in 1984.  I worked with floppy discs and the 3.5 discs.  I installed, copied and did all the normal things a businessman would do with a computer.  performed rating functions, diagnostics and the usual word and excel functions.  I have always been able to navigate with a bit of trial and error.

I am so freaking lost with this windows 10 I am about to cry.

I have never been so frustrated in my life.

This windows 10 is just awful.

Why, when something works, do geeks have to upgrade to make it even better.

I will keep plugging through.  I have spent half an effen hour trying to get the favorites bar to work.

What a mess.  In a few weeks, I am sure I will feel differently, but if anyone talks about intuitive programs etc. this stuff is NOT intuitive.  It is agony.

Later

Old Bob
