Hi,
Thank you for posting your query in the Microsoft Community forums.
This option 'Hide inactive icons' features is removed from Windows 8 and later version of the Operating System.
To navigate to Notification area icons:, follow these steps:
a. From the Windows Desktop, right-click the Taskbar and click Properties.
b. In the Taskbar Properties window next to Notification area: click the Customize button.
c. In the Notification Area Icons screen, under Behaviors drop down, you can find these three options:
>Show icons and notifications
>Hide icons and notifications
>Only show notifications
You can use the feedback app to send your thoughts directly to the teams building Windows.

yes, I already know about those options, but still no way to hide automatically the inactive icons.
is annoying having to hide the inactive icons manually each time.

because if you hide the icon, you will not receive notifications about the updates of that app.
there are some apps that run in system tray area, for example AdFender, it is automatically executed at Windows startup and its engine works in the system tray area with an icon, later when the app update its filter lists shows you a notification which activate the icon, and in Windows XP/Vista/7 few seconds after the filter lists are updated and the app icon is inactive, the icon is hidden automatically due inactivity, but in Windows 10 TP this is not working.

There is no "Behaviors drop down" in the screen I encounter after I click the Customize button you referenced, so I'm wondering which version of Windows 10 you're talking about vs the version I have, which is 10.0.10586... ??? I'm guessing that I am replying to a post that is so old that everything has changed in the settings area you describe. Wonderful.

Hi BigInfo
You need to check and see how old the information is that you are replying to, before posting.
You will see that it was posted a year and a half ago, on October 22, 2014.
There have been no less than 30 newer versions of the Windows 10 Insider Preview released since then, and tons of changes.
Another issue is that the member who originally posted this question used some screenshots from a version of Windows XP which was released in 2001?
Regards
