DLNA and Windows 10

I'm running the Tech Preview on a virtual machine and haven't been able to figure out how to test DLNA functionality using the VM.

At present, on Windows 8.1, I am able to access and play content residing in shared libraries on my PC, using my TV and Blu-ray player (both of which are DLNA certified), via LAN/Wifi. I can browse, select and play the contents of these libraries directly from the DLNA certified device (i.e. the actions are initiated by the TV, or Blu-ray player, as opposed to being "broadcast" by the PC)

Can someone confirm that this functionality still exists in Windows 10?

Many thanks

I think DLNA features have been all but been removed. You can right click on a media file in Windows Explorer and select Cast To which uses Windows Media Player in the background.

The Movies & TV app has a Cast To option from the now playing screen and the Groove music app has no DLNA features at all.

If you want to do any DLNA you are going to use 3rd party apps of WMP

Thanks for the input.

At the moment on 8.1, as long as you have streaming enabled in WMP, and the media in one of your libraries, DLNA works great. You don't have to be running WMP. The DLNA device just picks up the media on its own and you don't have to go near the PC. Very convenient.

I had this same question and I was confused why in the latest build of Win10 my XBOX One couldn't see the media on my PC anymore... Well, after trying various things, I figured out it does in fact still exist, however, one would think there is a more intuitive way to access it, of which I have not yet found.

Go to Settings, then up in the top right of Settings use the search and type stream. You will find it will present (for me) 3 options, the first of which is "Media streaming options". This will allow you to control and turn the feature back on (or off if you wish). I hope this helps, I was happy I can finally view my media from DLNA devices again! :D

Hello, is there any chance you could provide a screen shot of this "enable DLNA" screen you have found?

When I select 'Media Streaming Options' via the method you suggest I just get the same screen as either the control panel or WMP leads to, i.e. this one:

Do you get a different screen?

Hello Kemaleon

I have the same screen, like in Win 8.1. All devices are in "allowed" mode.

But, when I try to make a connection from my TV to the Win 10 laptop I am not able to find the Windows machine in the TV source list, like it was in Win 8.

Do you have the same problems?

greetings, Martin

No, I can see my PC just as it always was before with Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. Even the folders I have my media stored in show up right down to the subfolders, the problem is the files do not show up at all on either my TV or my Xbox One. They don't show on my phone either however my phone tells me that there are no files being shared.

I have everything shared, I can 'cast to device' but thats a cumbersome system and I'm currently using Plex as a media server and that shows all my shared content fine from the same source.

My guess is its a network sharing/homegroup bug. I have a query posted on here myself but MS support have been giving me generic irrelevant answers like "try downloading the latest drivers" and "try turning media sharing on" when I already told them it was.

Gave up for now, will reinstall later and try again in the hope they fix it but for now I'm using Plex.
