Cannot uncheck proxy server setting in Windows 8 since it is grayed out

My son has a Windows 8 laptop that worked fine on the internet for about 2 months.  All of a sudden it will not connect to the internet and gives proxy errors.  He does not need to use a proxy server.  I had him go into the LAN settings and found proxy server is checked and grayed out so je cannot uncheck it.  He is a freshman in college so I am trying to troubleshoot for him remotely.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Thank you for your help but none of the suggestions worked.  I saw another post somewhere that suggested malware had taken hold.  We ran Windows Defender and it found nothing.  However a scan with other software (don't remember which one) found over 300 malware items on his computer that seemed to stem from a download of a video game.  After they were removed he was able to uncheck Proxy and connect to the internet.

Thanks again.  No longer have confidence in Windows Defender...
