Some fonts are fuzzy and 'thicker' in IE9 in comparison with IE8

I use Expression Web 4; I have uninstalled IE9 beta.

When IE 9 was installed I noticed that some fonts (Trebuchet MS and Arial) were both fuzzy in comparison; Trebuchet MS font also appeared 'thicker/fatter' in IE9. Is this a problem with IE9 or the W3C CSS specifications? Segoe UI font seemed OK. The font Trebuchet MS looked 'normal' when my web site was viewed in compatibility mode, without 'thickening' of the fonts.

There is no mention of a pending update for Expression Web 4 (to keep up with IE9) in the Expression Web forums.

Hi chemartist95,

If the website fonts look good in compatibility view, then the problem might be with the website. As of now, I would suggest you to disable “Always Use Clear Type for HTML” in Internet Explorer and then try to visit the website to see if the font looks good.

Steps to disable “Always Use Clear Type for HTML”

a.    Open Internet Explorer.

b.    Click on Tools.

c.    Click “Internet Options

d.    Click “Advanced” Tabs.

e.    Under Multimedia, Uncheck the“Always Use ClearType for HTML”.

f.     Click OK

g.    Now restart Internet Explorer 9 and check if you’re able to get the right fonts displayed.

Hope this information is helpful and let me know if you need any further assistance.

I already tried that approach. I also tried disabling hardware acceleration. Fonts (Trebuchet MS and Arial )remain fuzzy.

What is equally interesting and frustrating is that the same font fuzziness and increased thickness' is observed with Firefox 4 beta, but not Firefox 3.6.10.

Maybe, there is a problem with the W3C CSS3 font specification. But Microsoft should further investigate the problem of font distortion in IE9beta.

Thanks anyway.

Hi chemartist95,

You’re right. The problem might be with the CSS3’s font specification. They have incorporated new syntax. While IE 9 isn’t a final release yet, things are definitely look up for web developers. Yes, we’ll still be supporting IE 7 and IE 8 for some time, and yes, IE9 still lacks a few things, like support for CSS 3 text-shadows or HTML5’s form elements, but it’s a step in the right direction.

You’ll have to wait until the final release of Internet Explorer Version 9.0

Hope this information is helpful and let me know if you need any further assistance.

I am also having the same problem, I'm not sure if it is related or not but I have not had any problems with the fonts over the past week, everything has been working great on my end with the new beta, until today, I'm not sure if my system got new updates last night or what but the fonts on many of the sites we go to are jacked up, I will attach a screen shot
