IE9: A program on your computer has corrupted your default search provider setting for Internet Explorer.

Every time I open IE9 I get a popup telling me:

A program on your computer has corrupted your default search provider setting for Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer has reset this setting to your original search provider, Bing (www.bing.com).
Internet Explorer will now open Search Settings, where you can change this setting or install more search providers.

I cannot change the default search provider in "Manage add-ons". The context menu command "Set as default" does not have any effect.

How can I fix this? Reinstalling IE9 does not help.

Answer

After searching the web for quite some time without finding an answer but many other people with the same problem I decided to find the reason for this behavior myself.

After some trial and error it turned out that this error was related to the current user profile. Once I realized this it was only a matter of endurance and time to find the fix.

The solution is quite simple:

  1. quit IE
  2. delete the following file C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Protect\CREDHIST
  3. restart IE

Fixed it for me.
