how to block advertising from appearing

I want to get rid of having to see so many ads on IE9 when viewing websites. How do I stop them from appearing?

Hi,

In addition to SC Tom's suggestion to turn on the pop-up blocker, here are additional suggestions.

1. AdFender (free) http://www.adfender.com/

2. Ad Muncher (not free) http://www.admuncher.com/

3. The HOSTS file from winhelp2002. Read the instructions and warnings.

4. Turn on IE9s Tracking Protection and download a list.

Tracking Protection - Microsoft Windows:

Internet Explorer 9 Tracking Protection Lists:

If you are talking about pop-up ads, then make sure Pop-up Blocker is enabled (Tools > Pop-up Blocker > Turn on Pop-up Blocker). There are also settings to add sites that you want to allow pop-ups on, such as your bank or bill-paying sites.
If you're talking about the imbedded ads in web sites that activate when rolled over, there's not much that can be done about that except practice careful mousing :-)
