Vista freezes when opening zip files

Whenever I try to open a zip file in Vista, it goes beserk and trys to open new windows of IE every second.  Is this a problem with IE browser or is it Vista?  I tried once with Firefox and seemed to have the same result.  Is there anything I can do to fix the problem?

Hello Dslewis83,

Welcome to the forum!

Opening a .zip file with Internet Explorer will launch a countless number of windows, so lets get this corrected for you.

Caution:
Modifying REGISTRY settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly.  Modifications of these settings are at your own risk.

  • Click the Start Orb
  • Search regedit
  • Click Continue on the User Account Control
  • Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.zip
  • Click the drop down arrow to the left of the .zip folder
  • Right click OpenWithList
  • Click Export
  • Choose the location and name of the backup
  • Click Save
  • Right click OpenWithList
  • Click Delete
  • Click Yes
  • Right click UserChoice
  • Click Export
  • Choose the location and name of the backup
  • Click Save
  • Right Click UserChoice
  • Click Delete
  • Click Yes
  • Exit regedit

Your .zip files should now open with the native compression/decompression system that comes with Windows Vista.

Hope that helps, look forward to hearing back from you.
