Cannot find server or DNS Error__Internet Explorer

I was attacked by malware (Trojan.FakeAlert) I rebooted in safemode and ran Malwarebyts which removed the infection. However now I cannot use IE7 to connect to the internet. I cannot connect to Microsoft.com or any site apparently using HTTP. I have added microsoft to the trusted sites but nothing I seem to do works. I am running XP sp 3. I have run the diag. and this is what it says:

I have tried resetting defaults under tools but it does not solve the problem. I can connect to online games with the exception of one game my daughter plays. which is Shaiya and it will not connect.

I can however connect to all sites using Foxfire. I am at a loss as to how to correct this I am reluctant to delete foxfire for fear of not being able to connect at all.

Please dumb down any help that you can offer as I am not the brightest bulb in the lamp.

Thanks for your insight. I contacted Microsoft support and by live chat got the problem resolved. The problem it seems was that proxy server was selected under lan settings. Once that was disabled IE worked fine.  doh!!!

I suspect you have much more work to do!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall Windows.  A Repair Install will NOT help!

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually: http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan!  You may need to download the MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

2b. Vista or Win7=> Run this scan instead: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm

3. Now run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting requested logs in an appropriate forum, not here.
