Oh, you're back?!

If IE is slow, chances are your computer's slow, too. That being said...

Please answer all of the following diagnostic questions by number in your very next reply (no need to quote this post):

1. Did Win7 come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it, did you do a clean install of Win7, or did you upgrade from Vista to Win7?

2a. Is Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (already) installed? See...

   • Which version of the Windows operating system am I running?
      http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/help/which-version-of-the-windows-operating-system-am-i-running

2b. Is it a Win7 64-bit computer?  See...

   • Is my PC running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows?
      http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/find-out-32-or-64-bit

3. Does the behavior persist if you start IE in No Add-ons mode?

=> Start | (All) Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet Explorer (No add-ons)

Note: Disabling all add-ons is NOT the same as starting IE in No Add-ons mode!

4. Does the behavior persist after you Reset IE Advanced settings & reboot?
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Reset-Internet-Explorer-settings

5. What is the full name of your installed anti-virus application or security suite and when (approx. date) does your current subscription expire?  What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) are installed?  What third-party firewall (if any)?

6. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer?

7. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [pick one] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

8. Are ALL of the following updates listed in View installed updates (not Update History)?

    • KB2570947, KB2616676; KB2559049, KB2567680, KB2563894, KB2556532; KB2532531, KB2555917;

    • KB2544521 or Windows Internet Explorer 9 [<=TELL ME WHICH ONE]

Note: Much of the above is covered in one or more of the links I posted ten days ago.

Plugins and add-ons usually causes Internet Explorer to run slow.

You may try to do the troubleshooting  in the links below to optimize your Internet Explorer:

Reset Internet Explorer Settings:

IE, and computer, slowness is most often the result of IE not always closing threads associated with closed tabs. And its inability to display some web pages. (EG: for 2 years IE will crash when displaying MSU's email web pages.)

An obvious result of this is IE continues to flash graphics from closed tabs.

Hulu.com is the most obvious: open hulu, watch a vid, click the Hulu home button and the video display from the "closed" page does not close. It is displayed over the hulu main page.

When the computer becomes way slow the task manager will show the threads from closed tabs at 70+ percent of CPU.

This happens on at least 12 computers I own and support. Using  xp, w7, and w8. These computers are all not-slow except when using IE.  These computers include quad core, 16 GB, new computers.

This has been happening for years.   Much worse since the release of the latest version, and latest updates for all versions, in the past 6 months.

Many website will not display, freezing IE, and the computer starts crawling.

This is NOT a plugin, addon, issue. IE does not close threads, and it retains graphics from closed pages.

Chrome and FF do not exhibit this behavior. Even on hulu.

In this current instance of IE I have 3 tabs open. Every time I click on a tab the graphic from a closed tab is flashed before the selected tab's page is displayed. Using IE 10 on w7, 2400 mhz dual-core, 4 gig ram.

So, I have advised all my computer clients to NOT use IE when ever they complain of computer slowness. And then much joy is experienced by all.

Umm, it was YOU that suggested that his computer would be slow...

You and the OP may disagree with me all you want. Nevertheless...

Fact: Internet Explorer is part & parcel of the Operating System. If IE isn't working properly, Windows isn't either!

Hence his computer was slow, not just Internet Explorer.

I am in the same boat as the OP.  My computer runs great.  I get it tuned up on regular basis and find the only problems are issues with I/E.  I know I have to wait for the ads to appear, but my old dial up from years ago was faster.  The only reason I ever use i/e is because of compatability issues for some sites I like to use. It took me less time to open safari and get to this page and write this comment than it takes for i/e to completely open my home page.
