Internet Explorer 8 shutdown problem, just shuts down with error message notification apparently randomly

I have a problem with IE 8 shutting down, it does this anytime after you start it, to several hours later, or more, no apparent pattern.

I am running Windows 7 Professional (SP1) 32 bit, all latest updated (4Gb installed) 3.25 Mb available ram, about 35% used generally, I am using McAfee Total Protection (latest updates), and I have installed Malwarebytes, just installed, Java 6 update 30, after removing old version first with Java Ra.

I have been having this problem for 3 - 4 weeks, I followed the instructions from a similar question, "Internet Explorer Keeps Shutting Down Periodically", but this has not solved my problem.

the following is what I have already done to solve my problem with IE 8:

More troubleshooting methods :

What antivirus/antispyware/security products do you have on machine? Include any you have

EVER had on this machine including those you uninstalled (they leave remnants behind which can cause strange issues).

-  McAfee Total Protection (latest updates), and I have installed  Malwarebytes, no other security software ever used

 except standard Windows security software.

If no joy something maybe blocking it.
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - IE with no Addons - does this work better?

 -  no menu item for this here, or anywhere else, I checked !.

IE - Tools - Internet Options - Advanced Tab - click Restore then click Reset - Apply / OK    - have done both of these.

IE - Tools - Internet Options - Security Tab -  click reset all zones to default - Apply / OK

Close and restart IE and/or IE with no addons      - not able to run IE 8 without addons ( no menu item for this ).
any better?
IE - Tools - Manage Addons (for sure disable SSV2 if it is there, this is no longer needed but Java    -  Have done this.
still installs it and it causes issues - you ever update Java go back in and disable it again.) Look for
other possible problems.

How to Change, Add, or Remove Startup Programs in Windows 7  - I use a utility program for this, Ashampoo WinOptimizer 8

Also get Malwarebytes - free - use as scanner only.    - scan found no errors/malware.

Try these to clear corruption and repair/replace damaged/missing system files.

Run DiskCleanup - Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup

 - I use a utility program for this, Ashampoo WinOptimizer 8.

Start - type in Search box -  COMMAND   find at top of list -  RIGHT CLICK  -  RUN AS ADMIN

sfc /scannow      - ran this in scan only mode, no errors.

How to Repair Windows 7 System Files with System File Checker  - this site explains scannow commands

Then run checkdisk (chkdsk).     - ran this no errors.

I have re-set of IE 8 to default settings ( I have re- enabled some useful addons that the Microsoft Fix It Utility does not claim cause problems ).

I have also run the Microsoft Fix It Utility - for IE 8 problems.

So far doing all this has no fixed the problem, upgrading to IE 9 is impossible because I use some family history software that is not compatible with IE 9 at the moment.

Is there a way to uninstall, then re-install IE 8 ?, or is the problem caused by something else ?.

Thank you.

That seems like a lot of work to fix a single error message that happens just after

shutting down IE8 most of the time.

This behavior is almost certainly being caused by a third-party program or browser add-on.

Work through add-ons troubleshooting (this will take some time since the problem is intermittent.) McAfee is not above suspicion.

Sorry this didn't help.

It turns out the problem was being caused by the 'My Ashampoo Toolbar' which has some useful features, i may be able to get an update, that does not cause these problems, but I am not certain.

When i stopped the toolbar from showing, the problem happened less often, and after de-activating the toolbar, the problem disappeared completely!.

I re-activated the McAfee SiteAdvisor Toolbar, Script Proxy ( also McAfee ), and  McAfee SiteAdvisor BHO, the problem did not return, so now i also know the McAfee toolbar components were not the cause.

I will have to remember this, before installing other toolbars !.

Thank you all, for all your help !,

Best wishes, David Gomm.
