Hi Linda,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community Forums.

Based on the issue description, it appears that you are getting an error “script error line 5” while trying to access Internet Explorer and unable to install Internet Explorer 9 through Windows Updates.

I will certainly help you out with this issue.

Here are few methods that you may try in order to fix the script error.

Method 1: How to troubleshoot script errors in Internet Explorer on Windows-based computers

Method 2: Check for the issue by running Internet Explorer in no add-ons mode.

Temporarily disable all add-ons to see if any add-ons are causing the issue.

To temporarily disable all add-ons:

a. Click the Start button.

b. Click All Programs, click Accessories, and click System Tools.

c. Click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

If Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) mode works fine then an add-on could be causing the issue. You will need to re-enable each one (process of elimination) to determine which one(s) is causing the issue.

To install Internet Explorer 9, refer to the link.

How do I install or uninstall Internet Explorer 9? (Applies to Windows Vista as well)

If the issue persists or you have further questions on Windows, please do not hesitate to let us know. We will be glad to help you.
