Unable to Install IE11

Related to: How to uninstall Internet Explorer 9 from Windows Vista and Windows 7

Help Needed!

I am unable to install any version Internet Explorer.  OS is Win 7 Home Premium.  Installation process for IE11 reports that a newer version of IE is already installed on the machine and installation will not proceed.  Here's the rub, Internet Explorer does not appear on the list of installed programs either on the start menu or the control panel add/remove programs list.  A search for iexplore.exe comes up empty.  The "iexplore.exe" does not exist in Program Files/Internet Explorer.  I have edited the registry to show that version 9 is installed, (there are a million references to Internet Explorer in the registry), subsequent attempts to install version 11 still report that a newer version is already installed and will not proceed.  Attempts to install version 9 have similar results only that the installer reports that version 9 is already installed and will not proceed.  Wasting a lot of time on this issue, can anyone offer a solution?  Thank you very much.

not sure what version the system thinks is installed now.

Even if you can't start iexplore.exe to use Help, About you can check on the current version of browsing functionality in your OS by using  msinfo32.exe  (System Information).   Find  Loaded Modules  in  Software Environment (use the Search category names only if you prefer that to navigation.).   Then sort by Version.  The sort is a string sort so 10 or 11  will come up higher in an ascending sort than 9.   There you will find at least  ieframe.dll  indicating what version of IE that you have installed and active.  It should correspond to the level that the Windows Features list item shows but the exact version will give you a clue about the update that the module came from.
