Unable to play MP4 videos in IE 11

Original Title : IE 11 and mp4 videos

I just installed Windows 8.1 via Store on my work PC, and yesterday on my Surface RT

Suddenly mp4 videos on some website stop working

Website: http://www.jw.org/en/bible-teachings/family/children/become-jehovahs-friend/videos/

It says "Error loading media: File could not be played"

This videos works fine on IE 10, Firefox 20 and Chrome 30 (Windows 8)

Hi Jorge,

1.    Do you get any error message when you playback the video?

2.    Is the issue occurring only on this website?

3.    Are you using Modern User Interface Internet explorer or Desktop Internet Explorer?

You might be facing this due to the compatibility issues with the browser.  I suggest you to refer to the following Microsoft article and check if it helps.

Videos won't play or webpages don't display correctly

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/internet-explorer/videos-dont-work#ie=ie-11

Note: The Reset Internet Explorer Settings feature might reset security settings or privacy settings that you added to the list of Trusted Sites. The Reset Internet Explorer Settings feature might also reset parental control settings. We recommend that you note these sites before you use the Reset Internet Explorer Settings feature.

Hope this information is helpful. If you still face the same issue, please do get back to us with the additional information and with the results of the above methods. We will be glad to assist you further.

1. Yes, as I said on my question, it says "Error loading media: File could not be played"

2. Didn't know. Need to found a site that provide mp4 video files

3. I'm using modern and desktop browser on my Surface RT. And desktop browser on main PC (both Win 8.1)

Already tried the compatibility stuff. The site doesn't allow to use the compatibility browser icon but I use the menú command and add it to the list of compatibility

The issue is still there

And repeat again.. this works on IE10 in Windows 8 without compatibility stuff. Works also on Firefox and Chrome (Win 8 and Win 8.1). This only happen when update to Win 8.1 and using IE 11

So as I understand, is a IE 11 and mp4 videos issue

You can watch the videos (and see the issue yourself), are not a secret, in fact thos are 2 minutes videos for kids/family

I am having a very similar problem. I upgraded my Lenovo Yoga 13 from 8 pro to 8.1 and have the same message on the same jw.org website. I factory restored to 8 and the website plays fine. I upgraded again to 8.1 and have the same Error loading media: File could not be played problem again.

I found that Chrome works. I don't like chrome so much, but for the time being it's a solution. It's a strange problem, I know someone who has win 7, and on her machine Chrome has the same problem, Explorer works fine!

Hi,

the JW site is using a third-party video player.... they need to update it from http://www.longtailvideo.com/

You can temporally tweak IE11 to make it look like IE10 to the website to allow the MP4 video's with captions play in IE11.

F12>Emulation tab>change the Document Mode to IE10...(Emulate IE10)

then click the link to the Video you want to play....

!important.... you will have to keep the IE Developer tool open while you are watching the video... If you close it the website will revert back to IE11.

Regards.

Thanks IECUSTOMIZER. My main issue is need this on Surface RT (Modern). I'm a developer, but the one who use most this is my wife

If emulate to IE10 works, then is a compatibility issue with IE11 and not with the plugin I guess. Otherwise why it works with Chome and Firefox latest versions?

Dear IECustomizer.

Thank you for your good post and workaround. It helped me saving a lot of time.

(I recognized the problem, too, after upgrading 4 PC's from Windows 8 to 8.1 ... and on every one of them)

THANK YOU, kind regards
