How do I change my log in password to my computer without changing my Microsoft account password???

So frustrating and dysfunctional!! The two should never have been connected in the update.

Hi,

If you are using an admin account and a Microsoft account, changing your computer login password only is not possible. Login password and Microsoft account password are linked and any changes with password will take effect on both.

If you are using a local account, it is possible. Just press Ctrl + Alt+ Del > you will receive a windows to click on Change password> Click on the change password> Enter the new password.

You can also check the solutions and information suggested on this link.

Keep us posted.

Hi Mhowat,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

If you do not wish to log into Windows on boot, Press Winkey + R to open Run box

Type control userpasswords2 > Press Ok or Enter

Uncheck "Users must must enter a user name and password to use this computer".

Click Apply

Type in Password

Confirm Password

Click Ok

You'll not be asked to log in again.

Go to Settings > Accounts > Select Sign-In Options

Under "Require Sign-In" > Select Never

If member has Home Version of Windows 10, they will not be able to use this command. It will be necessary to use Accounts section to change password.

Net User command may be easier.

This is bad. I need to send my other laptop in for repairs and do not want to reveal my microsoft password to the repair guys. I do not want to change my microsoft password because it will mess up my other devices. I have done the change passwords2 thing and it had me create a new password which doesn't work. I still have to use the microsoft password to log on. I manged to get into user accounts and set it to never, but it isn't working. the log in remains my microsoft password. Trust me I m not an idiot. This shouldn't be this hard.

Follow up;

If you are needing to get passport control in  way similar to my situation; Create a new user account and keep avoiding the prompts that will loop you into Microsoft. t the end don't set a password, or if you chose, set one NOT your microsoft password. Then go in and make this new user an admin.
