Edge Pinned Sites - Live Tiles

Pinned sites in windows 10 functionality does not work. When upgrading from windows 8/8.1 to windows 10 - any pinned sites under 8.1 'seem' to function ok, until they are unpinned and then re-pinned. Any newly pinned site in windows 10 does not function.

All that seems to work is Edge will load the correct url from the pinned start menu tile, the tile image and tile colour seem to work. However the notification section fails to function. No images are loaded from the pinned website. I have tried this on a dozen or so PC's updated to windows 10. It simply not longer functions, unless the pinned site was previously pinned in windows 8.1

Here is example browserconfig.xml

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
 <browserconfig>
  <msapplication>
   <tile>
    <square70x70logo src="https://www.mysite.com/images/wlt-tiny.png" />
    <square150x150logo src="https://www.mysite.com/images/wlt-square.png" />
    <wide310x150logo src="https://www.mysite.com/images/wlt-wide.png" />
    <square310x310logo src="https://www.mysite.com/images/wlt-large.png" />
    <TileColor>#CCFFFF</TileColor>
   </tile>
   <notification>
    <polling-uri src="https://www.mysite.com/notifications/1.xml" />
    <polling-uri2 src="https://www.mysite.com/notifications/2.xml" />
    <polling-uri3 src="https://www.mysite.com/notifications/3.xml" />
    <polling-uri4 src="https://www.mysite.com/notifications/4.xml" />
    <polling-uri5 src="https://www.mysite.com/notifications/5.xml" />
    <frequency>360</frequency>
    <cycle>1</cycle>
   </notification>
  </msapplication>
</browserconfig>

Here is an example notification xml 1.xml

<tile>
  <visual lang="en-US" version="2">
    <binding template="TileSquare150x150PeekImageAndText04" branding="logo">
      <image id="1" src="https://www.mysite.com/notifications/msquare.gif" />
      <text id="1">My Site</text>
    </binding>

    <binding template="TileWide310x150ImageAndText01" branding="logo">
      <image id="1" src="https://www.mysite.com/notifications/wide.gif" />
      <text id="1">My Site</text>
    </binding>

    <binding template="TileSquare310x310ImageAndText02" branding="logo">
       <image id="1" src="https://www.mysite.com/notifications/lsquare.gif" />
      <text id="1">My Site</text>
      <text id="2">My Site</text>
    </binding>
  </visual>
</tile>

It would appear that pinned sites are held in a database and the information never flushed out. It also appears the registry never flushes out unpinned site data:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PushNotifications\wpnidm

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft community.

I understand your concern and will guide you in the right direction.

I would appreciate if you can provide us the following information to help us understand the issue better.

  1. What is the make and model of the system?

  2. Are you referring to taskbar pinned application or pinned sites in Microsoft edge?

  3. Do you get any error message when you say “No images are loaded from the pinned website”?

  4. Did you make any changes to the PC prior to the issue?

Make sure to install all pending Windows update and restart the system to check.

I would suggest you to run the Windows App troubleshooter and check if it helps.

The app troubleshooter will automatically notify you if there’s a problem with an app and try to fix the problem. If you continue experiencing problems with an app, try running the Apps troubleshooter. This tool can automatically identify and fix some problems with apps.

Refer the link below and check if it helps

Answers:

1. What is the make and model of the system?

Irrelevant. Tried around a dozen different PC's, laptop and windows 10 tablets.

2. Are you referring to taskbar pinned application or pinned sites in Microsoft edge?

Edge pinned sites on start menu.

3. Do you get any error message when you say “No images are loaded from the pinned website”?

No error messages are displayed when pinning, or when selecting tile to load url. Live tile can be turned off/on but images never display on tiles. Within server log no images are downloaded by PC IP, only the notification xml's :

GET  /notifications/1.xml  HTTP/1.1  200   793   -   Microsoft-WNS/10.0

4. Did you make any changes to the PC prior to the issue?

I thought this was obvious, windows 7 to windows 10 upgrade, windows 8.1 to 10 upgrade and windows 10 to 10-1511.

Apps trouble shooter does not discover the problem. All updates are installed on every PC.

The most unhelpful of responses, but thanks for stating the obvious and first steps anyone with little knowledge should try. Clearing edge browser data has no effect on clearing the pinned site data in the registry (see above), or any other stored information relating to pinned site data.

Thanks - posted in said forum - it got pushed into oblivion as off-topic forum post. Doh.

Ok so this is what I've discovered so far

1. On a windows 10 PC device pinning a website to start menu via Edge creates a tile and tile image on the start menu, but only the notification.xml files are fetched - the notification image files are never downloaded from website.

2. Unpinning tiles simply removes them from the start menu - the fetching of the notification xmls continues behind the scenes. This is a big overhead on system boot as all deleted tiles historical urls are fetched over a 180 second period.

3. This means without any pinned tiles your development / live system PC may well be attempting to fetch notification xmls from website that may no longer exist, pages deleted, browserconfig files updated etc.

4. Removed all registry entries for pinned urls especially in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PushNotifications\wpnidm

5. Deleted all folders / files in

C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe

6. Ran in powershell to re-initialise Edge

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml" –Verbose}

7. Loaded edge and re-setup for favourites and settings etc. (which re-creates the file / folders deleted in 5 above.

8. With no edge pinned tiles on start menu re-booted PC. Checked server logs and verified that the PC is still attempting to fetch all previously deleted tile urls. Doh.

Where the **** is windows 10 storing Edge pinned tile data?

How the **** does one flush the data so PC stops attempting to fetch unpinned tile notification xmls?

When will windows 10 developers fix the edge pinned website functionality so that the notification.xml images are also fetched from a website?

I advise that anyone testing this functionality gives up - as they may end up with their windows 10 PC blasting a website with multiple fetches (eg 'GET /notifications/2.xml HTTP/1.1' 'Microsoft-WNS/10.0' )under the windows push notification service functionality. My PC currently sends 140 requests every boot. 5 fetched per deleted tile.

Lee,

I've been struggling with this since the first versions of Windows 10.  We had made a decision to roll out Pinned Sites Live Tiles on our group of sites as a nice feature for those using Windows 8/8.1 -- and it worked great.  Since Windows 10, the feature is effectively broken and it would be unfortunate to have to abandon it, but without ANY support or acknowledgement from Microsoft I think that we have no choice.  It's really too bad -- if it only worked like it used to with Windows 8.1 this could be a really great user experience.

It's almost random how it even works on Windows 10.  Some sites in our network it seems to work as expected, and some sites -- with IDENTICAL XML just simply do not.  It loads the tile logos and sizes, but simply never pulls notifications.  It even creates the folder in LocalState\PinnedTiles with the correct msapplication.xml and all of the images.  When pinning the site to any Windows 8.1 computer or Windows 8.1 Phone, it works perfectly every single time.  Microsoft has admitted there is absolutely no way to debug this, as it "fails silently" and makes no event log at all.

Here are some example sites I've found.  Every one of these use the exact same code, and makes literally no sense.

http://www.blumhouse.com/       WORKS ON WINDOWS 10

http://www.theherdnow.com/     DOES NOT WORK ON WINDOWS 10

http://www.faithwire.com/          WORKS ON WINDOWS 10

http://www.crimeonline.com/     DOES NOT WORK ON WINDOWS 10

I'd be really curious to your experience on these if you see what I see.

Microsoft, please assist us with making this work.  This is a real opportunity missed to create a unique feature that  would give sites a reason to promote Edge as a primary browser to use.

Thanks.
