List of Valid Locations for Bing Maps

I am using Power BI mapping features that use Bing Maps in the background.

Power BI has a way to label fields as Continent, Country, State/Province.  There is no documentation on valid entries to get the areas highlighted that you would hope.

I posted on the Power BI forum asking for a list of valid references, but the answer came back to ask here.  The big one is the Continent area.  Especially because if I type Latin America or Central America in the Continent field, the United States is highlighted.

Also, there are some areas like New Zealand and Papua New Guinea that are never highlighted unless you enter in the Country Name.

Is there any documentation or best practice list to know what continents or region groups to use and also what countries fall into each of those major groupings?

Thanks.

Ann

Hi Alwweb,

John Hopkins have a GitHub available if you check out their site at https://systems.jhu.edu/research/public-health/ncov/.  I will pass the link you provide above to the Power BI folks I know to see what they think.

Update: I believe I have an answer for you.  The maps charts you are using rely on Polygons and when I attempt to reproduce your issue I get an error message that charts need Country/Region, State/Province, County or Postal Code.  The artifacts you are asking for are under a geographic class called "Continent" and that does not have a polygon but rather a point that is placed at the geographic center.  A great example of this is Australia, which is both a Continent and a Country.

When you use it in the Chart controls it shows as a polygon because it is being interpreted as a "Country"

When you search on Bing you get a point as it is interpreting that as a continent https://www.bing.com/maps?osid=854e4011-5301-4e4b-b707-1a97f9479268&cp=-28.94695~133.2711&lvl=5&imgid=8e626ffe-ea79-4a78-8ce0-134a05da205b&v=2&sV=2&form=S00027

When you search for a region within Australia, you will get the polygon https://www.bing.com/maps?osid=e877b671-9ef4-4e34-abff-83fe454a0315&cp=-31.579156~143.12334&lvl=6&imgid=47726d7d-5e51-4014-a216-c2efe3d0a209&v=2&sV=2&form=S00027

So in order to get a continent polygon, you will need to show the regions within that continent.
