(ME2 Spoilers) Legion and the Geth in ME3

As we know, Legion's loyalty mission is basically about uniting the Geth under one banner (or directive).  Regardless of your choice at the end, the rebel faction that was led by Saren was ended and Legion asserts that all Geth now share the same ideal.

Now I just realised that one of the screenshots I've seen is that of Shepard using his new Omni-stab against a Geth Trooper.  Now until now, I'd believed that the Geth would be one of the ally races that you'd recruit  into your Grand Army of the Citadel!  I suppose there are any number of theories as to why there would be Geth opposing Shepard in ME3; what are your thoughts on the role of Legion and the Geth in Mass Effect ?

Personally, I'm totally confused.  My guess is either Shep and Legion didn't manage to wipe out ALL the Reaper-worshipping Geth, or between ME2-3, they've had another clash of ideas and a faction of Geth has split from the main nexus.

In Mass Effect 2 you have the option to either rewrite the rebel Geth or destroy them. It would not be beyond the realms of possibility for some rebels to survive either choice, or perhaps some other runtimes find the idea of humans rewriting geth to be abhorrent, so side with the Reapers again.

The wildcard is The Quarians, it has been confirmed that the Quarian/Geth conflict is to be resolved in ME3.  Shepard could just be helping out Tali in that conflict, there is still tension between the two, as evidenced by the Tali/Legion confrontation in ME2...:-)

Maybe I'm too much of a TNG fanboy, but I've always wondered if Legion's "individuality" could have a similar affect on the geth that Hugh's had on the Borg?

I don't see the geth situation as being as simple as just the heretics being the only offshoot, heck the geth you encounter during Overlord are a different collective so any superior AI with an agenda could take control of a faction of geth.

That's a big question I have TBH; are there more than two Geth factions?  If so, what is their intention and what could compel them to ally with Harbinger and the Reapers?  Having said that, Arkham made the good point that maybe the Quarian/Geth standoff becomes a full-fledged war, so maybe Shepard is forced to choose a faction to help him and eliminate the other (which would be a shame, coz I'm hoping to be able to craft a galaxy with Quarians and Geth at peace!)

Well, it was hinted at in ME2 that when the Heretics are returned to Geth space and they all "link up," the experience of being under Sovereign's control could have unforseen traumatic effects.

I remember Legion saying in ME2 that the heretics outside of the Geth space station wouldn't be effected by the rewrite until they jacked up to a platform and got the code downloaded to them. Maybe the Geth you saw opposing Sheppard were ones that haven't been affected by the rewrite yet. IMO

I agree with vote DC on this one. The Geth probably decided that a Human rewriting them is irrelevant, and join up with the superior AI.

Maybe all Geth had been rewritten by Legion in ME2 and sided with the council, then when the Reapers arrived in ME3 they just flipped the Geths collective mind switch back to becoming enemies again???

Maybe there are Geth who were indoctrinated and are immune to the rewrite.

More important question, can we play as Geth in the Galaxy At War mode? That would be something elsee!
