Not sure why my name is profane

Was trying to set up a clan tag in Black Ops and everything I tried was denied due to profanity. Found out the name "Dave" is restricted. Looking for some clarification as to why. Thank you.

I searched up the name, honestly there could only be two reasons, from the evidence that I found.

First, it could be restricting any first name's for personal and privacy issues or because the name Dave has had a lot of profanity usage on the internet.

You should go over to the Call of Duty Official Forums and ask them about this. Not really something we can give you guidance on as we won't have answers. The clan tags they ban are up to them. Their website is as follows: www.callofduty.com/board. You'd most likely get a better answer out of their moderators/administrators than you would here.

I was unable to put dave as my xbox live motto.  I tried this a couple weeks ago when someone mentioned dave being a banned word.

Halo and COD seem to be having this problem

Yeah it seems to be an Xbox Live issue if you can't use it in your motto.

@Hassassin Ninja

I did a search and found a post on the Black Ops forums basically saying this is an issue with the 1st parties profanity filter (ie, Xbox Live, PSN) and not theirs. The post can be found here: www.callofduty.com/.../viewtopic.php

So back to the original question, what about the name "Dave" is profane? I've tried entering different names and they work fine. And using "Dave" in my Xbox Live motto is also not allowed.

From the code of Conduct:

-

Don't give out personal information of other players (such as their real name, address, phone number, credit card number, etc.) in any way (including, without limitation, through voice chat or the names you create for your gamertag or mottos). This information could be used by other players for illegal or harmful purposes. You should also avoid giving out your own personal information.

-

Dave is a real name (and unlike "John" which could mean something else). "Dave" has no other meaning besides being a name, so it has no legal use on XBLA, so it's a banned word. Simple.

That's bull. Zoidberg is a "name" but it's a character. No copyright infringement (b/c obviously there are 9 billion Master Chiefs, John117's, etc out there) and THAT is supposedly "Offensive". Yet, I get the message, only recently mind you - my GT has been the same for over a year - "The Name of the  Creator of The File is Not Allowed on XBL" which makes ZERO sense. Either someone's being a ruthless POS with the "Censor Words" or it's sheer incompetence.

I'd really like to know how MS gets away with this kind of childish nature. I understand their strict rules and whatnot but to not tell us exactly what we're doing wrong is the epitome of "irresponsible". If you're going to hold us responsible, the logical thing is to give us the reason why especially for something as ridiculous as this. If anything, be more specific in your "Terms of Agreement/Code of Conduct" or give the entire list of "Censor Words" so nobody has to keep forking you over $10 to change their GT every now and then.

Or am I to understand that MS has become the slickest and saddest set of Pan Handlers ever?

Hey Zoidberg! I'm going to check into this, but also keep in mind that "zoidber" isn't you entire GT. It could have to do with the other half, or possibly just a smaller part of one of those words. Just because it doesn't seem offensive to you doesn't mean it isn't offensive to someone else.

Also, where exactly are you seeing that error message? Which game?

I do have all the answers for you gentlemen. Unfortunately I do not yet have a solution. I am working on it.

I too am affected by this filter glitch. I can tell you first and foremost that you are not deined the ability to create a clan tag because you have an offensive GT. For those who are like me and unable to create a clan tag in Black Ops it is because the filter is in fact not working correctly.

I can also tell you that the filter used to govern player input data such as a Clan Tag and Custom Class Name in Black Ops is the exact same filter used to govern the creation of Gamer Tags for Xbox Live. So if you can not use what you want to name your custom class then you also can not creat a new GT with that word/phrase.

The XBLPET owns and operates that filter. I am actively attempting to work with them to fix this issue. I encourage you all to post your examples of GT that can not use the Clan Tag feature in Black Ops in my "Clan name denied due to prohibited text" thread in the xbox Black Ops forums here: http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_360_games/a_d/codblackops/f/313/p/80451/392415.aspx#392415

Also review my thread on the Activision Black Ops xbox 360 Forums here (more info, more disscusion):http://www.callofduty.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=73&t=412611&p=5822830&sid=hhcr2fjmsdb18ku1hthg9fff22#p5822830

Yes the filter IS broken. You are doing nothing wrong. Hopefully the XBLPET will realize this and fix the issue.

Hope this helped you guys.
