Kinect mic not working for game chat

As the subject states my Kinect mic doesn't seem to work for game chat.  I did make sure the box is checked in the options menu to allow for game chat with Kinect.  I also tried unplugging/plugging back in the Kinect, still doesn't work.  Here is my setup, in case it helps with the troubleshooting.  I play on a 23" gaming monitor that does not have speakers.  I use a Turtle Beach XP500 headset for game sound, and I can hear people's voice in the headset, but nobody can hear me when I speak.  Nothing is plugged into the controller, so I assume the Kinect mic should be the default.  Anybody have some suggestions as to what might be the issue?

After chatting with someone from xbox customer service they told me that it's the fact that I have a Turtle Beach headset plugged into the optical connector.  I asked if the Kinect game chat would work if I had a surround sound stereo hooked up via the optical connector and they said,  "It should work with specific sound systems like 5.1 surround and other speakers. The things that we see here is that the Turtle Beach may have a configuration that does is not capable of receiving voice command but can only hear during game chat"  Does this make sense to anyone?  Astro Gaming claims the Kinect voice chat feature will work with their headsets as a temporary solution until adapters are made available early next year.

I dunno.  It does't work for me with my Astro and Mixamp when I play CoD Ghosts.  But, it works fine on BF4.  I am thinking it might be a CoD issue.  Is that the game you tried it with?

I tried the party chat and it seems to work fine.   For whatever reason the game chat is blocked when a headset is plugged in via the optical cable.  How lame is that?

Support is giving a bit of a run-around on that. It's definitely a game-specific issue. I have a headset which is 5.1 surround, and the microphone plugs in with a completely separate cable which was designed for the 360. SO, I can't plug that mic in, which is actually better, because I know there is no way the mic can be interfering with the Kinect mic. Even still, I get no "in-game voice" in Call of Duty (not talking about Party Chat.)

Quite simply, if all you have plugged in is an optical cable to the back of the Xbox, there is no way for that to flummox the Kinect mic. You could plug the optical cable into the Optical Out on the back of the TV, and that wouldn't interfere either, but I'm betting the Kinect mic still wouldn't work.

I've been a tech specialist and trainer for about 13 years now, so I'm no stranger to hardware conflicts. Let's just say, if my VCR is unplugged and in a box in my closet, I'm pretty sure it won't interfere with my Blu-Ray player's ability to play discs. Likewise, an unplugged mic isn't going to interfere with the Kinect Mic....

Problems I've had have been resolved by making sure the kinect knows who I am...... If it says guest, even though your are logged in, no chat will work!

How do you make sure the kinect know who I am? I have the same problem with chat, I can hear my friends but they can't hear me. It worked fine last week but have noticed that the kinect sees me as a guest. Any help would be very welcome. Thank you
