Headphone/mic splitter for 3.5mm controller/adapter

I have recently bought a headset with a 3.5mm mic jack and a 3.5mm headphone jack. I need to know if I bought a 3.5mm Jack splitter, to split my headphone/mic into my controller or adapter 3.5mm hole. Will that work?! Need to know urgent please. Thanks

Something like this should work

You have to make sure that the male connector at the end of the splitter has a 3 pin connection as shown here http://i.imgur.com/4Q1NtMq.jpg otherwise you won't be able to use your microphone
