Can't obtain IP address

Hi,

I'm a bit confused about the NAT status as that comes after you've passed the IP Address stage successfully so I'm not sure how you are seeing a NAT change if IP is failing?

If you are wireless can you also state whether you are using the white or black external adapter or the Xbox 360S Internal adapter

Manually entering in network information/ Checking if DHCP was enabled/ Restarting modem, router, and xbox 360.

Who is your ISP: Comcast

When you run "Test Xbox LIVE connection" what is the exact message shown on screen?

Can't obtain an IP address from your router or modem.

And im using a white external adapter.

Also one other odd thing i noticed. Whenever i try to connect, i always get a red x in between Xbox 360 and Network (Network: Failed)

But the first time i restarted my modem, router, and xbox, it made it in between Network and Internet (Internet: Failed)

Ive tried restarting again multiple times now but no luck. Also, when it did make it to internet: failed, i had manually entered in my ip/subnet mask/gateway. When it failed, i unfortunately didn't get a chance to read it because i exited accidently. But im pretty sure it said something about my DNS settings.

So then i went into my command prompt and checked if i had the correct DNS setting in and i did. S i have no idea what happened there.

Hi,

If you are connecting wired it should be very straight forward

• Make sure you are running the very latest firmware:- homesupport.cisco.com/.../WRT160N
• Reset your Xbox network settings to factory defaults
• Power off the router
• Power off the Xbox
• Power on the router wait 1 min
• Power on the Xbox and try to connect

If that fails, connect your Xbox direct to the Modem but power the modem off first, I believe your modem has a battery backup so you will need to remove the batteries to fully power it off.

The idea of this modem test is to see if the issue is your router or the Xbox itself

All right i did all that but still no luck. I was excited because the first time i powered off th modem i didn't realize there was a battery backup but i removed it this time but it still didn't work.

Hey mate, have you tried this guide for the first error message you listed? If not, please give those steps a few minutes, to see if they do the trick. 

Yep i tried all the solutions on the guide. However i did notice one thing. In the guide it says "If your network hardware does not have DHCP turned on, your console IP address will be 0.0.0.0 or the IP address will begin with 169."

When i coose automatic my IP address does start with 169, my subnet mask is 255.255.0.0, and the rest of the settings are at 0.0.0.0

This doesn't make any sense because i am sure that DHCP is enabled im my router settings.

Ok well if you have:-

• Reset your Xbox network settings to factory defaults
• Connected direct to the modem after powering it off (the modem)
• Also tried a different Ethernet cable when connecting to the modem

Then I'd say its very likely that the Xbox network card is faulty (but not at the physical level) you don't see them fail like this at ip address level often (IMO) but it does happen.

If you want to be extra sure you could take your Xbox to a friends house and reset the network xbox settings to defaults again and hook up to their router, if it also fails there on ip address (i.e. the fault travels with your Xbox) you know its the Xbox

All right i brought it to my buddies house And it was doing the same thig. His worked fine. So i guess there is a problem with my xbox. Would it make any sense to have him bring his xbox here and test it with my router, or is that unneccesary?

Also how much would it cost me to get this fixed?
