major xp home setup problem!!

I tried to reinstall windows xp home edition from the installation cd to my husbands laptop which had been affected by a virus.  It apparently came up with files that were missing (he kept hitting esc to progress) and now the setup is stuck at 39 mins as the error message keeps saying "an error has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing.  One of the components that windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.  Access is denied.  Press OK to view the setup log file."  a box appears that shows the error is installation failed f:\I386\asms.  error message: Access is denied.

I cannot get setup to stop running - i'd preferably like to take it back to the factory settings.  i can get safe mode to start but not sure how to take it from there - can anyone help me get out of this vicious cycle of setup restarting and then failing and restarting the computer to bring up the error message?

Could be several things causing this, the CD Rom drive may not be reading the disk properly due to contamination on either the disk or the lasers on the drive. It could also be that you are not formatting the hard drive during the windows installation. When installing windows you will be prompted to choose a partition to install windows on. Choose to delete all partitions. Follow through with the prompts to confirm the deletion. Then choose to format the drive using the quick method. Follow the prompts to continue installation. By default, windows will leave a 8mb of un-partitioned space. Post your results please.
