I need help my computer wont let my printer scan(Hp deskjet all in one printer f4580) it says WIA scan error. How can I fix this?

Hi,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community!

Based on the description, it appears that you are getting an error “WIA scan error” while trying to use HP printer scan.

I will certainly help you out with this issue.

Let’s follow these methods and check if it helps.

Method 1: Restart the Dependencies services.

a. Click on Start, in Search box type “services” without quotes.

b. Scroll down until you see Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).

c. Double click on it and go to the tab called Dependencies.

d. 2 services should be listed.

e. Exit that window and look for Remote Procedure Call (RPC).

f. Make sure it’s on manual or if it is on Auto, just leave it. Make sure the service is started though.

g. Go to Shell Hardware Detection and Double click.

h. Set the Start up Type as Manual and hit Apply.

i. You should be able to start the service by hitting Start. Check with the issue.

Method 2: Refer the suggestions provided by Diana D on August 2, 2010 and check if it helps.

Hi. I'm using windows 8.1. I have an HP Officejet Pro 8600 all in one with a scanner. It had been working fine for the past two years. For some inexplicable reason, two days ago the computer no longer shows the scanner as a feature of this printer, and I can neither scan from the computer nor from the printer/scanner itself. Using HP's print and scan doctor, it has become stuck for over an hour on the "Windows (WIA) Scan. Reading your reply to a similar issue above, I checked out the WIA "dependencies" tab and found it only has one 'service' listed - the "Remote Procedure Call". Both WIA and RPC are enabled as automatic, with the latter - RPC listed twice, the second as manual (so it is both automatic and manual apparently). What additional service should be listed under WIA 'dependencies'? And how do I add this so there are two dependencies as you've noted, or is this off track, and if so what do I do to get the scanner functioning once again? Thank you!

Hi. I'm using windows 10. I have an HP Officejet Pro 8600 all in one with a scanner. It had been working fine for the past year. For some inexplicable reason, today the computer no longer shows the scanner as a feature of this printer, used it 12/20/2016 and it worked fine now I can neither scan from the computer nor from the printer/scanner itself. Using HP's print and scan doctor, it had become stuck for while on the "Windows (WIA) Scan. Reading your reply to a similar issue above, I checked out the WIA "dependencies" tab and found it only has one 'service' listed - the "Remote Procedure Call", once expanded under it is "DCOM Server Process Launcher" and "RPC Endpoint Mapper". Both WIA and RPC are enabled as automatic, with the latter - RPC listed twice, the second as manual (so it is both automatic and manual apparently) both are running. Set "Shell Hardware Detection" to Manual and hit apply then started the service.  Still won't scan but can still print. What additional service should be listed under WIA 'dependencies'? And how do I add this so there are two dependencies as you've noted, or is this off track, and if so what do I do to get the scanner functioning once again? Thank you!

I wrote about having this problem starting this thread awhile ago. I tried a number of the suggested solutions, but none of them worked. It took two calls to Dell tech support to get this fixed (for now). The first call, the technician took control of the computer, changed a number of settings, uninstalled the WIA and an associated program, reinstalled these, and after well over 2 hours viola the computer and printer worked again for about 8 days. Then I had the same problem. Again called tech support, a different technician again took control of the computer, adjusted quite a number of settings, including the settings on our router (via long distance online control), and after a couple of hours the computer has been working with the printer & scanner ever since (about two weeks now). I'm told if it malfunctions again it will need a new card reader installed. Fortunately it is still under warranty (about 4+ years old), so tech support was available, as the fixes mentioned failed to work.
