ECC Error Logging and Reporting in Windows 7

I am planning a new 64-bit machine for sound editing, and want to use ECC memory for reliability.  This means using a Xeon processor and a motherboard that supports ECC.  All set there.

But how (if at all) does Windows 7 handle ECC error logging and reporting?  Are corrected ECC errors noted anywhere, so I can tell when a memory block is going bad, before it starts causing crashes?  Is this a feature of only some flavors of Windows 7?

Thanks.

Answer

Hello Delphi Guy,

Welcome to the Microsoft Answers Community!

When ECC errors are reported WHEA monitors and corrects these errors automatically. If the error cannot be resolved then it will be logged in the Event Viewer (Click Start > Right click Computer > Click Manage).

You can find more information here:

Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA)

How WHEA performs PFA on ECC Memory

Hope this helps. Let us know the results.
Thanks & Regards,
