Sound Randomly Stops Working on Windows 10

Hello, I am having a problem with my Windows 10 PC. Randomly, the sound stops working, even if it has been working fine for 3 days straight. One thing that has fixed it before was doing a Windows update, but there are not any available right now. Another thing that's worked is completely resetting the computer, but this is very hit or miss in regards to fixing the issue, so I'd rather not do it again.

I have also already tried updating and reinstalling my audio drivers, but this still doesn't fix the problem. Is there anyhting else I could try?

Hi Brandon,

Updating or reinstalling the drivers usually takes care of sound problems on the computer. To isolate your concern, we'd like to verify if you've already visited the manufacturer's website of your device to download the latest driver? Also, we'd like to know if you've deleted the driver on the device manager while uninstalling it?

In the meantime, you may visit this article for more troubleshooting steps on how to fix sound problems on Windows 10.

We're looking forward to your response.

Yes, I've already the manufacturer's site and deleted the driver, but I always ensure it gets reinstalled.

Issue as such can be a result of some changes in the configuration settings or any broken components on the system file related to your audio driver. To provide you the appropriate steps that can resolve your concern, we’d like to verify the following:

  • Have you made any recent changes prior to this issue?
  • Have you tried following the steps to run the audio troubleshooter on the link provided by Kristoffer Abs?
  • Are you getting any error messages or error codes?
  • If available, have you tried connecting your audio device to your other computers?

Regards.

I haven't made any changes to the system prior to the issue?

I have tried the Audio Troubleshooter and it did not solve the problem.

I am getting no error messages or codes.

I can't try my speakers on other devices.

We appreciate the information that you've provided. Compatibility issue is one of the factors that may cause this. For us to check if there's any available updates on our Microsoft Update Catalog, we'd like to know the hardware ID of your driver. To check this information, follow the steps below:

  1. Press Win + R keys at the same time to open the Run dialog box.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type devmgmt.msc and click on OK to open Device Manager window.
  3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers category, right-click on the audio driver, and click on Properties.
  4. Click on Details tab and select Hardware Ids on the drop down option under Property. (see screenshot below as a sample)

We look forward to your response.

The following shows up under Hardware ID's for my IDT High Definition Audio driver:

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_111D&DEV_76C7&SUBSYS_103C2AC8&REV_1001
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_111D&DEV_76C7&SUBSYS_103C2AC8

Both of these showed up, so I copied both of them.

Apologies for not responding with this sooner.

Hello,

Thank you for getting back to us. The issue is possibly caused by an outdated audio driver. May we recommend to try updating your audio driver by performing the steps below:

1. Press Windows key + R, then type in devmgmt.msc and press Enter.

2. Expand the Sound, video and game controllers section, then right-click on IDT High Definition Audio CODEC.

3. Go to Driver tab, click on Update Driver.

4. Select Browse my computer for driver software and chooseLet me pickup a list of device drivers on my computer.

5. Select High Definition Audio Device and click on Next.

6. A warning message will appear, select Yes. You should receive an alert that Windows has successfully update your driver software.

Note: Make sure to select High Definition Audio Device as stated in Step 5.

Update us on the outcome.

Regards.
