why has the latest windows update moved all my files into another user folder ending in .000?

When I closed doen my PC last night it started doing updates and was taking a long time so I left it and went to bed. This morning I logged on - no problems but I then realised (can't remember how) that my files had all moved on to another folder in the c drive ending in .000. After doing some seearching for advise on line I restarted the PC several times but its not changed. I have even closed down completely to see if this made a difference - it didnt. I am now worried that I will close down again and from what I have read this may be a temporary file.

I am not a computer whizz and reading some of the things I have has worred me that I could mess up trying to correct it. One suggestion I have seen is to remove the latest updates  - there were 6 in total - KB4532693, 4537759, 4534132, 4528759, 4538674 and 1909.

Please can anyone help. My work is stored on Dropbox so I assume that will be safe but its everything else I'm worried about - documents, photos etc.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks!

Hi Katey, this is happening much too often at the moment, you are logged into a temporary account and restarting your PC 4 times in a row, is generally the best fix, I would suggest your try that again . .

NOTE VERY IMPORTANT: Do Not copy your files into the Temporary profile you are currently in, when the situation is corrected, your files will be deleted with the Temporary Profile and will not be recoverable !!

If the restarts do not resolve this for you:

Please open Windows File Explorer
Navigate to C:\Users
Do you see two user folders that look like yours?
Open those folders and check inside Pictures, Documents . . . etc. and see if your files are there

If your files are there:

Create a new user profile with Admin privileges
Log into the new user profile
Copy all your data from the old profile to the new profile (Documents Library, Pictures Library . . . etc.)

If you still have not found your files, look for a Windows.old folder on your C Drive, expand that to open the users folder contained inside - check there for your files, icons . . .etc.

If you do find your files . . . etc. there, copy them out as soon as possible as Windows will remove the Windows.old folder in time

I assume you're running Win10 1903 or 1909, and just installed the February 2020 cumulative update.

By any chance, are any of the afflicted machines running Avira or AVG?

It's been implicated in the bug.

Best solution so far is to uninstall the buggy cumulative update, KB4532693. Details to follow.

Hi Dave

I found the files in .000 but I dont have enough storage on my PC hard drive to 'copy' from it to the new profile. Can I just 'move' the folders (cut and paste or whatever you might call it) to the new profile folder?

Hi Katey

Yes when you create a new profile, you can simply open two File Explorer windows and drag your files and folders form one user profile into the other. Don't move the whole library folder (Documents . . etc) just move the contents of those library folders . . .
