Latest KB3074665 update fails to install

I've been using Preview builds since December, installed the latest a couple of days ago (Build 10240). Never had any problems with updates before.

Searching through the log shows the last entry as: -

Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070003: Security Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3074665)

Tried the following, none of it works: -

  • Windows Update Troubleshooting tool
  • DISM and SFC tools
  • Deleting the contents of the SoftwareDistribution/Download folder to force the files to download again
  • Unplugged all devices
  • Tried installing it 10+ times

I've posted this to the Feedback app also.

I'd just fixed all my other problems creating a new account and now this new problem arises, I was so close to a perfect Windows 10 installation!

Has anyone else got/had this problem?

Answer

One other thing.  I found the Windows PowerShell command to list all user accounts (including hidden accounts) with SID.

get-wmiobject -class "win32_account" -namespace "root\cimv2" | sort caption | format-table caption, FullName, SID

The -1071 account, which shows up in the log right before the error (above), is not present in the PowerShell list.  I think this account was removed (perhaps during Windows 8.1->10 upgrade) but references to it are still hanging out in some places, and that is the reason for this error.  I will try to clean it out of the registry and see if that allows the update to install.
