Parental Approval Required?

Okay, so I've had a Microsoft account for some time now and I recently tried to sign in to the "Games" application on my new Windows 8 laptop. Upon signing in, I get a fairly standard looking message asking me to accept the terms of use. When I attempt to do so however I get a message saying "You'll need to do this on XBox.com with your parent's permission." Apparently for some reason the account I have set up for XBox live is a child account. I am well over 18, and I don't recall ever attaching any sort of parent account to my Microsoft account. How do I fix this?

Hey there Jedi! If you are over 18 you can simply promote your account to adult through the Account Management settings on the console. You will still need to first accept the Terms of Use before doing this, and the Parent Account will be required to log in for that. Please let us know how that goes, thanks!

Unfortunately, as I said, I don't recall there ever being a parent account attached to my account. For this reason, I also don't know the username, email, password, or any other information about the account that is listed as my account's parent.

Is there a way for me to look up the email address of my parent account so that I at least know what account I need to gain access to to accept the Terms of Service? If not, do you have any alternative solutions?

Go to the Xbox and try to accept the Terms of Use or change your password and it will be shown to you.

1) Take that to http://account.live.com/password/reset for the password reset
2) If you can't reset it, go to http://account.live.com/acsr SAVE THE EMAILS SENT TO YOU
3) If that fails, contact Support (1-800-4MY-XBOX Option 2 in the US et Canada) and provide them with the Console ID number from Settings | System | Console Settings | System Info (it's on the 2nd line) and the reference number from the email sent to you in Step 2, and submit a UE Request. However, it is faster to have the Agent call you by going to http://support.xbox.com/contact-us?xr=footnav#0:6:3

That sounds like it could work. The only problem is that I don't have an XBox console. I'm encountering this problem when I try to sign into Games for Windows or the games app on my Windows 8 laptop. I also experience this problem on the XBox website when I try to upgrade my account or change my privacy settings.

Then, you will need to find an Xbox and download your profile there; it will provide you with the parental unit's addresse.

That's really the only way? I find it kind of surprising that there's no way to do this through the XBox website, especially since XBox accounts are used for so many things now apart from the XBox console.

Hey Ajedi32! I'm afraid so. If you can't find a a family member or friend with a console you can always try your local game store. They are often willing to help out in these kind of situations! Just make sure to delete your account from the console when you're done. :)

Otherwise, you'll need to create a new account with the proper adult age in order to use it. Hope this helps answer your concern!

All right then, I'll see if I can find a console that I can use. Thanks for your help.
