Error: Windows explorer has stopped working; CBS.LOG analysis and next steps

Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2

I have had repeated "Windows explorer has stopped working" errors.  These are being caused by an APPCRASH involving explorer.exe.  I ran sfc/scannow which generated a CBS.LOG file.  This file is hard to read but searching on the word "corrupt" gives two entries - see below:

I do not have a good restore point to go to.  I do have the 3 recovery disks I created when I first got my computer.  The error happens even when in safe mode.

How can I repair the corrupt files (assuming they are identified in the text below) with minimum disruption to the rest of the system?  Must I reload the entire operating system?  Thanks.

Conrad

A Clean Boot for Explorer

It might be caused by a shell extension.

Explorer (explorer.exe) is the program that is the Start menu and taskbar, folder windows, and the desktop (which is a folder window).

Explorer is built on addin programs called Shell Extensions. The standard ones are supplied by Microsoft but programs add their own.

  • Download Autoruns from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
  • Close any Explorer windows
  • Start Autoruns by right clicking and choose Run As Administrator
  • Click Options menu - Filter Options and tick Hide Microsoft entries and clear Include Empty Locations
  • Go to the Explorer tab and untick everything left.
  • Click Start. Ctrl + Shift + Right click a blank spot (just above the power buttons is one place) then Exit Explorer.
  • Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and choose Task Manager.  Check all explorer processes are closed. On the Process tab select explorer and right click and choose End Process, repeat if more than one explorer in the list.
  • Click the File menu then New Task (Run) and type explorer

If it helps, reenable ½ at a time to identify which one. If it doesn't help, restart AutoRuns and go to the Everything tab and untick everything there and reboot. If it helps, reenable ½ at a time to identify which one.

Run Microsoft's Fixit

Microsoft have a range of automatic programs to fix common problems. For Explorer problems see

http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_file_and_folder_diag/en-us

For the full list visit

http://support.microsoft.com/fixit/en-us

When you choose to download it, choose the option to run on another computer. Then you can save it to your harddisk. Open the folder, open the folder Fix it Portable, and run Launch Fix It. It will contain all 27 Fixits.

Recycle Bin

If the problem affects the Recycle bin delete the storage folders. It will be automatically recreated next time you delete a file or open the Recycle Bin. It will delete the Recycle Bin, and files it contains, for all users.

Close Explorer as above then type in the command prompt (or copy and paste by right clicking in the Command Prompt window and choosing Paste).

rd C:\$RECYCLE.BIN /s /q

then repeat for each drive changing the drive letter, eg

rd d:\$RECYCLE.BIN /s /q

rd e:\$RECYCLE.BIN /s /q

If the Desktop Doesn't Start

This will create a new empty per user and common desktop. This will test if a file on your desktop is preventing Explorer from starting.

Close Explorer as above then type in the command prompt (or copy and paste by right clicking in the Command Prompt window and choosing Paste).

md "%userprofile%\DesktopTest"

reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" /v Desktop /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d "%USERPROFILE%\DesktopTest" /f

md "%public%\desktopTest"

reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" /v "Common Desktop" /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d "%Public%\DesktopTest" /f

To set back to defaults after testing if Explorer now starts.

set ExpFix1=%User

set ExpFix2=Profile%

reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" /v Desktop /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d "%ExpFix1%%ExpFix2%\Desktop" /f

set ExpFix1=%Pub

set ExpFix2=lic%

reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" /v "Common Desktop" /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d "%ExpFix1%%ExpFix2%\Desktop" /f

You may need to log off then on.

Missing New Folder Entry

If the above doesn't help.

Click Start - All Programs - Accessories - Right click Command Prompt and choose Run As Administrator. Type Regedit and File menu - Import and import NewFolder.reg.

When you get error details.

Decoding Errors

-2147220978 style numbers are 32 bit signed integers, convert to hex with calculator.

Windows errors (smallish numbers) and  COM HResults (typically, but with exceptions, start with an 8 as in 0x80040154) are defined in WinError.h, except 8007nnnn where you look up the Window error number that it contains.

As a general rule Windows errors are less than 65,535 (0xFFFF). Errors starting 0x80000001 are Component Object Model (COM) HResults. Errors starting 0xc0000001 are NTStatus results.

NTStatus errors (typically but not always start with an C as in 0xC0000022) are defined in NTStatus.h.

.h files are the best source because it includes the symbolic name of the error which can give clues such as the source of the error. FormatMessage doesn't give the symbolic name only the description.

You get these files by downloading the Platform SDK (it's gigabytes)

If you just want the two files I have them on my skydrive so I can reference them anywhere I go.

Note internet errors (12,000 - 12,999) are windows errors but are specified in wininet.h also available above.

There are errors defined in other .h files. But 99% are in the three above.

Structure of HResults and NTStatus Codes

The most significant bit in HResults, and the two most significant bits in NTStatus are set on error. Hence Hresults start 8 on error and NTStatus starts C on Error. The next 14 or 15 bits are reserved and some specify the facility - what area the error is in. This is the third and fourth number when reading hex. EG 0xnn07nnnn - An HResult facility code 7 is a normal Windows' error (returned from a COM program - hence it's returned as a HResult). Facility codes are defined in Winerror.h for HResults and NTStatus.h for NTStatus codes. They are different.

To Decode 0x8003nnnn Errors

HResults with facility code 3 means the HResult contains OLE Structured Storage errors (0x0 to 0xff). These are the same as Dos error codes. These don't seem to be in Windows' header files and the list of codes is at the end of this post.

To Decode 0x8004nnnn Errors

HResults with facility code 4 means the HResult contains OLE errors (0x0 to 0x1ff) while the rest of the range (0x200 onwards) is component specific errors so 20e from one component will have a different meaning to 20e from another component.

This is why the source of the error is extra important for errors above 0x80040200.

To Decode 0x8007nnnn Errors

HResults with facility code 7 means the HResult contains a Windows' error code. You have to look up the Windows' error code not the HResult.

To decode 0x80070002. The 0x means it's a hexadecimal number, the 8 means error, the first 7 means it a windows error, and the rest of the number, 2, is the actual Windows error.

To look up the error we need it in decimal format. Start Calculator (Start - All Programs - Accessories - Calculator) and choose View menu - Scientific, then View menu - Hex. Enter 2. Then View menu -  Decimal. It will say 2.

Start a Command Prompt (Start - All Programs - Accessories - Command Prompt) and type

net helpmsg 2

and it will say

The system cannot find the file specified.

or look it up in winerror.h

//
// MessageId: ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND
//
// MessageText:
//
// The system cannot find the file specified.
//
#define ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND             2L

To Decode 0x8019nnnn Errors

HResults with facility 0x19 are HTTP errors. Codes under 16,384 (0x4000) are the same as HTTP errors, eg HTTP status 404: The requested URL does not exist on the server is 0x80190194 (0x194 = 404). Codes 16,384 and higher are BITS specific.

No solution was available through Problem Reports and Solutions

I can start and stop explorer.exe through the task manager and I can obtain an administrator command window this way too.

The original error details are:

I am working my way through all the reregistering of the shells registry entries; however I tried the command:

regsvr32 libstdc++-6.dll

since this was listed as the fault module and I got the error

The module "libstdc++-6.dll" was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found
Make sure that "libstdc++-6.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again.

**********

Two additional errors were uncovered while going through all the reregistering of the shell's registry entries:

The module "cscui.dll" failed to load
Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files
The specified module could not be found.

********

The module "msshsq.dll" was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80040201
For more information about this problem, search online using the error code as a search term.

It's a C++ dll not a COM dll. While C++ dlls can be COM dlls, this is a library for C++ programs. Only COM dlls require regsvr32.

Not all the above files are in Home edition.

This is not a Windows file. It is accessing memory it either freed or didn't sucessfully get.

msshsq.dll should register. Try in an elevated prompt

regsvr32 /u msshsq

regsvr32 msshsq

msshsq.dll should register. Try in an elevated prompt

regsvr32 /u msshsq

regsvr32 msshsq

I tried the two commands listed above in the order listed and got the same error message both times.  I'm not sure what an elevated prompt is but I think it means a command with administrator rights as indicated by the prompt: C:\Windows\system32
