The Microsoft Windows Search Indexer is slowing down my computer (using 86-95% of the 8Gb memory).

I have a desktop computer running Windows 8. I tried to stop it from the Task Manager, then to stop it from the Local Services and then set it to start only manually , to pause it, but it is restarting automatically after 15 minutes. What can I do to get rid if it?

Were there any changes made on the computer prior to the issue?

 

Method 1:

Windows uses the index to perform very fast searches of the most common files on your computer. To understand more about Search and indexing, you may refer to the article:

Method 2:

I would suggest you to follow these steps and run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter:

a. Open Control panel.

b. Click on Troubleshooting.

c. Click View all on the left pane of the screen.

d. In the list of options, click on Search and Indexing.

e. Click Next and follow the on-screen instructions.

 

Method 3:

If you want to disable Windows Search completely, follow these steps:

a.     Press the “Windows key + R” key on the keyboard.

b.    In the Run window type “appwiz.cpl” without quotes and press Enter.

c.     Click on Turn Windows features on or off in the left pane.

d.    Uncheck Windows Search.

e.    Click OK and restart the computer.

This does not answer the question. Disabling Windows search is not the solution to this problem and we know what Windows search is.

Windows Search doesn't show up as an option to disable it.

Yes.  The troubleshooter did not help.  I was able to turn of the windows search from services, however, I shouldn't have to do that to get it to stop hogging the cpu.

Bob is exactly right. There are times when the Windows Search Indexer slows my laptop down to a grinding halt. Can't the process be limited to only use a small percentage of the machines CPU or I/O. We do not want to stop the service completely but stop it hogging resources and slowing down our machines at inconvenient times.
