Pop Up Blocker on Windows 8 seems non existent

This is my second Windows 8 computer. I have suffered the same issue on both. The pop-up blocker turned itself off on both machines. How do I check on the pop-up blocker? This problem is existent in both Firefox and I.E. both of which I have the pop-up blocker enabled in the settings. 

What makes me think it's off is because I get pop ups, all the time...
and I use both Firefox and Internet Explorer (Which is Microsoft) my point being that because I'm getting pop ups on both, it makes me think the issue is with the Windows 8 Defender.

Check for malware:

Download, install, run, update and perform full system scans with the following two applications:

• MalwareBytes (FREE)
• SuperAntiSpyware (FREE)

Removing everything they find. Rebooting when needed. (You can uninstall one or both when done.)
 

Then perform an online scan with the eSet Online Scanner.

I have the exact same problem.  and I have Norton 360. so I don't need to download any malware protection. pop ups are not being blocked.  at all.

As with everyone else who responded to this particular problem, I have a pop-up problem.

Not only did my computer allow many pop-ups but it slowed down my computer.

I have Norton 360 and like many others, I figured between it and the Microsoft software I would be completely protected.

However, in February, my computer got hit by a serious Trojan. I ended up using <advertisement removed>. They ended up taking remote access of my computer [...] <advertisement removed>

Again last week I got hit by another virus of some kind.  I called <advertisement removed> and within an hour they had everything fixed.

During the cleaning I noticed that the technician not only used the Malwarebytes mentioned by someone else in the group but he also used the SUPRAntiSpyware download.

They removed many more issues that both Norton 360 and Windows Defenders missed.

The other one that is very helpful is called "CCleaner".  My husband uses it on his computer so I tried it on mine.  It was like clearing a field of landmines!!!

And, all three of these programs are free.

The first time he used the CCleaner, it found over 4300 additional threats that Windows Defender did not find!

Remember, you can never have too much protection especially these days when we store so much important information on our computers.

CCleaner is not finding 'threats'.  C(rap)Cleaner is doing exactly what its namesake says it is doing and removing files and such tat are orphaned and/or cold be emptied by other various means but have not been for whatever reason.  It is a beneficial program, no doubt, but it is not 'protecting' your computer as usually what it removes is benign and unused.

I recommend it, but it isn't 'protecting' you.  *grin*

I recommend, for protection, something like eSet NOD32 antivirus (just the antivirus, not the suite) and MalwareBytes combined.  Seldom have I seen people get infected with the full versions of those two products running in the background - one or the other has caught whatever is trying to get in... so far.

Microsoft deleted my first reply, so will try again, We are seniors, but not PC ignorant. Very interested in what system you are currently using. We will try the SUPRAntispyware and CCleaner when necessary. Very informative posting and we thank you in advance for you attention to the above matter.

I have found that if you open internet options in control panel, then click on the privacy tab, then make sure the block popup box is checked, it works better than the tools menu in internet explorer.  In the tools menu in internet explorer, there is an option to click on "Turn on popup blocker".  I did that and found out that the popup blocker wasn't turned on when I checked it in internet options content tab.  I hope this is a help.
