Gets the Error: An unhandled error occurred (1) when trying to play Super Street Fighter Arcade Edition on Windows 8

Original Title: how to get old games to work on windows 8

I have windows 8 and I am try to play Super Street Fighter Arcade Edition but it keep say An unhandled error occurred (1). I do not know what that means but all I know is the game will not work when it work fine on the last version of windows ,so why is it not working now.

Hi Dave,

Let me have additional information regarding this.

1.       What is the version of the previous Windows on which you were able to play the game without any issues?

2.       What is the version of the Super Street Fighter Arcade Edition game that you are trying to play on Windows 8?

3.       What is the exact error message that you get? (If there is any error code, include that as well)

The Windows 8 Compatibility center shows that the Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition game is fully compatible with Windows 8. For more information, you may check this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compatibility/win8/CompatCenter/ProductDetailsViewer?Name=Super%20Street%20Fighter%20IV%20Arcade&vendor=Capcom&Locale=1033&ModelOrVersion=1&BreadCrumbPath=super%20street&Type=Software&tempOsid=win8

However, in the game developer’s website, it doesn’t shows Windows 8 as the recommended operating system to play the game

http://www.fuzeqna.com/capcomsupport/consumer/kbdetail.asp?kbid=281&SearchType=advanced&referrer=&gpn=&CustID=&bUseEditor=&keyword=&rfield=&sortmethod=rel&usertype=&gpv=&catID2=405&formaction=search&catID1=1&IncludeHTML=&logsearch=False&catID3=&TotalResults=233&sct=KB&submitbutton=Go&match=and&catID4=

So, let’s try playing the game in Windows 7 compatibility mode and check if that resolves the issue. Please try the given instructions and check the status.

Make older programs compatible with this version of Windows

I would suggest you to run the Compatibility Troubleshooter and check if you are able to play the game. To do so, you may refer the article: “Make older programs compatible with this version of Windows” from this link:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/older-programs-compatible-version-windows

If the troubleshooter doesn’t fix the issue, then you may also try changing the program compatibility settings manually and then check if that resolves the issue.

I followed these steps and it worked for me, even in Windows 8.1:

11. Install Steam, download SSF4 AE as per normal.

2. When you first launch SSF4, it will install the Direct X framework 3.5 as well as an old version of the GFWL client. Win 8 may ask to download .net Framework 3.5 - hit yes/OK.

3. Once the preliminary installation steps are completed and you run the game for the first time, the game will crash to a black screen with "An unhandled error occurred (-1)". You will need to alt-tab back to desktop and quit the game from task manager.

4. Navigate to programs and features by right-clicking the bottom-left corner of the screen and clicking "Programs and Features".

5. Uninstall "Microsoft Games for Windows MarketPlace", then "Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE Redistributable".

6. Visit http://www.xbox.com/en-US/LIVE/PC/DownloadClient to download the latest Games for Windows Live client. If the following link doesn't work anymore, simply Google "Games for Windows Live Marketplace Client".

7. Run the installer.

8. SF4 should now launch successfully.

I've read on various forums, that depending on the version of Windows you are running; only Windows 8, 8.1 & 10 give this error; that you must refresh the Windows Live Games Client to the lates or 2011/2012 redistributable {depending on Windows version}, or uninstall that client & simply install 'Windows Live Essentials' which apparently replaces it:

OR This Version

Otherwise you can add the game to Steam AFTER Steam installation using the CD-Key or by activating in Steam Client using the original game key that came in the boxed CD version, or downloaded/purchased product key.
This also seems to give you access to Ultra SSFIV as a matter of course..!
