How long does it take for the Windows 7 Home Premium updates take?

I have a brand new Sony Vaio with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit preinstalled.  Upon booting up for the first time, I got 12 Windows 7 updates.  The reboot has been hanging on the "preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off your computer" screen for more than two hours.  Is this typical?

Since it tells me not to turn off the computer, how long should I wait until it's clear that it is hung up on something???

Answer
After 2 hours, I finally did a hard reboot. Upon the second reboot, it came up again with configuring the system message, but it quickly moved to show me percentages completed (it never got this far the first time). The system is finally up. I guess 2 hours is more than enough time to realize that something was hung up and to do exactly what the screen says not to do - shut down the system. Thanks for your reply earlier.
