Windows 7 updates - FUBAR

To those that are in the know.

Running Windows 7 pro 64bit (fresh new reinstall) after Windows updates cease to 'update'

Updates just hangs and after 12 hours of waiting for something to happen I through the towel in.

Have undertaken all of the obvious solutions as follows:

1. Reformatted HDD before fresh install

2. A complete Antivirus/Malware scan - No issues reported

3. Applied many recommended fixes from this site before posting - Obviously no success

Being only mortal I realise that I have only so long to live, so if some kind soul can offer or identify

a practical solution before I shake off my mortal coil I would be most grateful in return.

Answer

Start with setting automatic updates to "Never check for updates" and restarting Windows. KB3020369 needs to be installed before KB3172605.
