Windows 7 (32 bit): Recovery from image on USB drive error 0x80042412.

Lenovo R60. I take a back up to a USB drive, change HDD and try to recover using repair tool on installation DVD from the back up that I have just taken. The restore fails immediately 0x80042412.

I have tried removing existing partitions from the target HDD (Diskpart/clean) . I don't connect the USB HDD until it is time to look for the recovery image. There don't seem to be any options left to try. The three suggestions in the "help" don't really help. What next?
