Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC78:Server Error 555

An email account has recently developed a send fault. This account is not the 'default' or main account. The following message is displayed when attempting to send.

The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's email address. The sender's email address was .co.uk'.

Subject 'Re: enquiry'

Server Error: 555

Server Response: 555 Refused (external Mail From address). Please enable SMTP authentication to send mail.

Server: 'smtp.virgin.net'

The clue is in the error message:

"Server Response: 555 Refused (external Mail From address). Please enable SMTP authentication to send mail"

Go into account settings and set the smtp server to authenticate.

Windows Live Mail is not part of Windows. (Yes I know this forum name is confusing!)

Server Response: 555 Refused (external Mail From address). Please enable SMTP authentication to send mail.


Right-click on the account name in the folder pane and select Properties. On the Servers and Advanced tabs, change your settings to match the ones given on this page. After checking them all, close down Windows Live Mail and wait a few minutes before relaunching and testing.

Settings are laid down by your Email Service Provider, so they are the ones to ask. Most large ESPs (like Virgin) have detailed instructions on their websites.

Windows Live Mail has its own support forums at the Windows Live Solution Center. Please direct any further questions you may have to one of the forums on the right-hand side of this page. You will probably be asked to give your versions of WLMail and Windows so that the answer can be more precise. To find your program version, in WLMail press Alt-H A. If this doesn't show you the version and build number, press Escape twice, then Alt-F B.
