Desktop Icons problem

Increase the size of your icon cache and see where it takes.

If this cache is too small, Desktop icons may display improperly or show the wrong program's icons.

Step 1: Increase icon cache size.

Back up the registry

1.     Go to start and type regedit.exe.

2.     Navigate to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Explorer.

3.     Now create a DWORD value called Max Cached Icons and set its value to 4096.

4.     Close the registry editor.

5.     Restart the computer.

If the issue still persists, check if a third party service or application is causing this problem.

Step 2: Perform clean boot

Study the behavior of the icons when the computer is in clean boot state.
