Windows 10 - Mouse pointer starts moving on its own

In order to assist you better, I would like to know the following query:

Does the mouse work fine with other computer?

I suggest you to try the methods below and check if it helps.

Method 1: Run hardware troubleshooter

1. Press Windows + X key.
2. From the jump menu select Control Panel.
3. On the Top right click on view by and select large icons.
4. Go to troubleshooting.
5. On the Left panel click View all items.
6. Select Hardware and devices troubleshooter and follow the on screen instructions.

If issue persist, I suggest you to refer method 2 and check if it helps.

Method 2:

I suggest you to update the Mice and other pointing devices drivers and check if it helps.

To update the Mice and other pointing devices drivers please follow the steps below:

1. Press Windows + R key.
2. Type devmgmt.msc and hit enter.
3. Expand Mice and other pointing devices drivers.
4. Right click on the driver of your mouse and click update.

you already installed it successfully now, so you HAVE your licence for the free upgrade, its sitting on the MS server,  it should not go anyplace, even if you redo the upgrade after the cutoff, your free license should still apply

i would use windows 8 for the forseeable future, windows 10 is a complete mess that i unfortunately cannot recommend to anyone till its fixed

Regret the inconvenience you have experienced.

Try the below mentioned steps and check if it helps:

a) Open run command by pressing Windows key + R and type “devmgmt.msc” (without quotes) and hit Enter.

b) Spot and expand the “Mice and other pointing devices ”.

c). Right click on the Touch pad or Mouse driver and select “Uninstall”. Then restart the system and let the system install the driver automatically on Start. Once this is done, try to check the issue to see if the problem still happens.

Also suggest you to go for complete System scan withWindows Defender or any Antivirus software to pull out any malware, if it causing the issue.

Keep us posted if you require further assistance.

Interestingly I had the same problem with my Logitech wireless mouse in Windows 7 but it hasn't happened in the three months I have been on Windows 10.

Try turning the sensitivity down slightly in the mouse options.  It could be that the mouse logic is drifting slightly and windows is seeing it as movement when it might not if the sensitivity is altered.

those "canned replys" rarely work for anyone as far as i have seen and i doubt they are even typed by human beings, i think its scripted auto responses from a computer.

I replied to his original suggestion just to eliminate that non-helpful tract - was hoping to get some sort of developer input since I assume MS would be wanting to fix a lot of these issues with W10 with the community instead of boiler plate responses that don't help :( ! Sadly, got another boiler plate response "Scan for driver changes", "Run Anti Virus", "Clean your temporary drive" ! When I read these suggestion from a "Support Specialists" - I know that I've hit  a brick wall! :(

Ok I might have found the potential problem! I use a gaming peripheral called Saitek's HOTAS (its a flight stick). I noticed whenever I fire up games that use this - the problem tends to occur ! (though many times AFTER I've ended the gaming session and hours after that sometimes). 

This particular Saitek model called X52 also has a mouse controller built it (I never use it) - during a session a few mins back - I noticed my mouse pointer started moving again ! But for the heck of it - I tried using the controller's mouse  and immediately the problem stopped! (I just moved the mouse for 1 sec). 

Could be a driver conflict with Saitek's HOTAS drivers perhaps? anyways, I'm not able to uninstall the drivers in W10 (cant even find them). After this, my W10 froze again - and I've decided to roll back to W8.1!

Hope someone in the Dev community reads this and fixes it !

I've experienced similar problems and tried to switch mice, reinstall drivers and buying new glasses.

I tried to observe the circumstances involved and it seems that the issue (also) occurs when Word (just Word) repaints the screen (for unknown reasons). IMHO, this is related to the earlier painting issue where indents were sometimes not observed or random garbage appeared on the screen until a forced repaint (click the Paragraph icon). It seems to be triggered when scrolling with the wheel but once I take my hand off the mouse and begin to type, Word does a repaint after a few seconds.

Any clues in the Event log?  FWIW supposedly my Surface video driver is crashing occasionally but I usually get a message window about that.   ; )

However, in W8.1 I used to see the opposite of the OP's symptom description where it seemed that the pointer would occasionally be dragged down to the bottom of the window on its own.  I thought it might be caused by contention for the pointer, e.g. each pointer device seeing the other moving the pointer and thinking that it would need to do it too.  My workaround for that was to use Mousekeys to move it in the opposite direction.  Usually that stopped it.
